StLJN Saturday at the Movies:
Mike Stern, then and now
This week's video spotlight shines on guitarist Mike Stern, who's coming to St. Louis to play at Jazz at the Bistro starting Wednesday, March 12 through Saturday, March 15. As mentioned in a previous post, Stern will also be doing a special daytime performance for local music students and teachers; as that post also said, over the course of his career Stern has worked with a number of musicians originally from St. Louis, including bassist Tom Kennedy and drummer Dave Weckl, who will perform with him at the Bistro.
Another one of those St. Louisans, saxophonist David Sanborn, is featured in the first clip, a version of the song "Hideaway" that includes a guitar solo from Stern and was recorded back in 1985 for the German TV show Rockpalast.
The second video features Stern trading licks with bass player Richard Bona in an appearance last year on a Brazilian TV program, while the third "bonus" clip shows Stern in December 2007 doing an brief, somewhat goofy interview with Seattle radio personality Bob Rivers, followed by a bit of in-studio jamming.
