No long intro here, just a quick post to point out a few gigs that I've either neglected to mention earlier, or that have been added recently to the schedules at local venues:
* Finale has booked a return engagement for vocalist Kim Massie on Saturday, November 5, and will present guitarist Vince Varvel's trio on Wednesday, November 19.
* The Sheldon's Coffee Concerts series, which presents live music on weekeday mornings, will include concerts by traditional jazz favorites the St. Louis Stompers on Tuesday, November 15. And the Sheldon has also booked Mardra Thomas' Billie Holiday tribute show for an 11 a.m. performance on Saturday, February 25. Presumably, this could have some material overlap with the previously announced concert feauring Victor Goines and Ms. Thomas in a tribute to Artie Shaw and Ms. Holiday, which is schedule for February 18.
* Last but not least, BB's has booked a return appearance by guitarist Johnny A. on Wednesday, October 26. A. isn't strictly a jazz musician, or a blues musician, for that matter - his multi-stylistic approach and excellent chops remind me of the late Danny Gatton, incorporating blues, jazz, rock and even country into his all-instrumental music. (I wrote a bit more about him for the RFT earlier this year) If you're a guitarist, or just a fan of great guitar playing regardless of genre, he's definitely worth a listen.
