St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Sylvester Brown dropped in on a rehearsal for Mae Wheeler's Divas 2005 show, which will take place this Sunday, October 9 at the Sheldon, and writes about it here. The lineup isn't listed on the Sheldon's Web site, but thanks to Mr. Brown, we now know that the featured performers in the multi-genre concert showcasing St. Louis female singers will include Wheeler, Danita Mumphard, Adrianna Larkin, Therese-Marie, Kim Massie, Joy McCaleb-Bryant, Satin, Sherielle White, Amy Ehrlich, Wendy Gordon, Mary Dyson , and The River Blenders, described as "an all-female, barbershop-style chorus."
I don't know all these ladies, but the presence of Wheeler, Mumphard and Massie on the bill would seem to offer at least the promise of some jazz-related content, along with blues, soul, pop and gospel. And keyboardist Tony Simmons, who's serving as musical director, is a fine piano player and bandleader, so the accompanment should be first-rate. Based on his column, Brown seems to think the show will be a good time, and I'd say he's right.
