So What: Local News, Notes & Links

Here's this week's wrap-up of assorted links and short news items of local interest:

* This weekend's Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival was previewed by the Belleville News-Democrat.

* The Post-Dispatch's Sarah Bryan Miller wrote about how this weekend's closing of the Tavern of Fine Arts will affect local performers.

* Meanwhile, Thurman Grill and Provisions, another eating-and-drinking spot that frequently features live jazz, has been sold and will close temporarily for renovations at the end of June. The story quotes soon-to-be-former-owner Larry Weinles as saying the new regime plans a "continuation of live music," but there are no further details.

* KDHX has posted to their Flickr page a photo set from piano prodigy Joey Alexander's performance last Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro, and Kenya Vaughn of the St. Louis American reviewed the show.

* The Gaslight Squares posted to Facebook some photos from their recent gig for the St. Louis Jazz Club.

* The Riverfront Times this week announced the winners of the 2016 RFT Music Awards, with Tommy Halloran's Guerrilla Swing finishing first in the "Jazz" category and the Funky Butt Brass Band taking home the trophy in "Soul/Funk." You can see the complete list here.

* Speaking of Hallorans, Tommy's trombone-playing brother Charlie Halloran, who now lives in New Orleans, was the subject of a brief St. Louis magazine feature by Thomas Crone. Halloran the trombonist will be back in St. Louis next month with the New Orleans Jazz Vipers for gigs at Foam, Joe's Cafe, Focal Point, and Blues City Deli.

* And speaking of the RFT, electronic musician Eric Hall has put on BandCamp a recording of his set at Handlebar from last Saturday's RFT Music Showcase.

* Also now on BandCamp for streaming and/or downloading: The 442s' latest album RELAY, which was released on CD earlier this month.

* Richard "Groove" Holmes (pictured), the renowned jazz organist who lived in St. Louis for the last years of his life, is the subject of a tribute on radio station WKCR, which broadcasts from Columbia University in NYC.

It's another busy weekend for live jazz and creative music in and around the St. Louis area, with homecoming visits from a couple of distinguished expats, local festivals taking place in three different parts of the metro area, a performance from a notable participant in Chicago's thriving improvised music scene, and more.  Let's go to the highlights...

A bit further south, pianist and singer Carol Schmidt, multi-instrumentalist and singer Michele Isam, and singers Debbie Schuster and Katie McGrath team up to perform as "Women Under the Influence" at Soulard Preservation Hall, 1921 South Ninth St.

And back in midtown at Grand Center, Jazz at the Bistro is trying something a bit different this weekend, on Friday pairing a group of local burlesque dancers billed as the Randy Dandies with live music from the Funky Butt Brass Band for "Babes in Brassland." A similarly themed program titled "Tassles 'n Tunes," with music from Tommy Halloran’s Guerrilla Swing, is set for Saturday night.

Saturday, June 27
The Miles Davis Jazz Festival celebrates its tenth year with performances from drummer Montez Coleman's trio, trumpeter Danny Campbell's quartet, and saxophonist Fred Walker at the Jacoby Arts Center in Alton.

Also on Saturday, Chicago-based cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm will be in town to headline a show at the Schlafly Tap Room. The Vernacular String Trio and DJ Ghost Ice also are on the bill.

Jazz this week: Chesterfield Jazz Festival, Patrice Rushen, Andre Delano, Wine Dine & Jazz Festival, and more

It's jazz festival time across North America, with major events taking place in a number of cities including Montreal, Vancouver, Minneapolis -St. Paul, Washington DC, and more.

And though our town no longer has a large-scale, multi-day fest since the unfortunate demise of the St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival a few years back, local jazz fans can take some solace in two smaller festivals plus many other jazz-related events happening around town this weekend. Let's go to the highlights...

Tonight is the final show at Robbie's House of Jazz in Webster Groves, as the club ends its five-year run with New Hampshire-based singer Wendee Glick fronting pianist Dave Venn's sextet. (Robbie's co-owner and GM Dorothy Edwards has said she's looking for a new location with greater visibility; StLJN will have more information on that as it becomes available.)

Also tonight, the Tavern of Fine Arts presents their monthly "Experimental Arts Open Improv Night" with live improvised music; and Dizzy Atmosphere and Coco Rico offer a double dose of string band swing and Gypsy jazz at Thaxton Speakeasy.

Tomorrow, saxophonist and East St. Louis native Andre Delano is back home to perform a one-nighter at the Rustic Goat; and The People's Key, with special guests multi-instrumentalist Lamar Harris and saxophonist Matt McKeever, will present "Never Can Say Goodbye: Jazz Memories of Michael," their tribute to the music of Michael Jackson, at the Kranzberg Arts Center.

Also on Friday, singer Joe Mancuso's quartet will perform at Nathalie's; keyboardist Matt Villinger leads a trio at Cigar Inn; trumpeter Jim Manley plays at Thurman Grill; and Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes will be at C.J. Muggs in Webster Groves.

On Saturday, the second Chesterfield Wine and Jazz Festival will take place at Chesterfield Amphitheater. Unlike last year's ticketed show, this year's event is free and open to the public, and will feature a lineup topped by the electric jazz group Yellowjackets (pictured).

Also on the bill are Bach to the Future with special guest saxophonist Eric Marienthal; a group fronted by saxophonist Freddie Washington and drummer Maurice Carnes; pianist Ptah Williams' tribute to Chick Corea, and saxophonist Christopher Braig's band with singer Erika Johnson. For a closer look at a recent Yellowjackets show, check out this post from a couple of Saturdays ago.

Also on Saturday, the second day of the Wine, Dine & Jazz Festival in Belleville will feature keyboardist Pete Ruthenburg interpreting the music of Herbie Hancock, plus sets from singer Zena; Latin jazz band Son Montuno; and Soul Cafe.

Elsewhere around town, trumpeter Keith Moyer's quartet will play at Evangeline's; saxophonist Sam Hargadine's group with guitarist Tom Byrne and singer Feyza Eren will be at Bar Italia; and the Gateway City Big Band will play a free outdoor concert at Kirkwood Park Amphitheater.

On Sunday, the summer edition of the St. Louis Record Collector and CD Show will take place at the American Czech Hall on the south side.

Later that afternoon, keyboardist and singer Patrice Rushen, who lately has been doing more teaching and film scoring than performing, will be in town for a rare appearance at the Sheldon Concert Hall. For more about Rushen and some video samples from recent performances, see this post from last Saturday.

Also on Sunday, the Missouri Association for Jazz Education will present a jam session at Kirkwood Station Brewing Company.

Looking beyond the weekend, on Monday saxophonist "Blind" Willie Dineen and the Broadway Collective return to BB's Jazz, Blues & Soups, and on Tuesday, Miss Jubilee will play a free outdoor concert at Fanetti Park.

Jazz this week: The Jazz Crusaders, Wine Dine & Jazz Festival, Sylvia McNair, Coco Soul, and more

Mid-summer heat has arrived in St. Louis several weeks ahead of schedule, but if you can brave the unseasonable temperatures, there are a number of jazz and creative music events worth checking out over the next few days.

Today at lunchtime, the band Swing Set will play a free concert from noon to 1 p.m. at the Old Library Plaza at 8th and Locust as part of the St. Louis Public Library's "Not So Quiet" concert series.

Tomorrow, there are several options for the discerning listener, including the first night of the Wine Dine and Jazz Festival in downtown Belleville. Friday's performers at the free event include the Usual Suspects with Gypsy Brown, the Dawn Weber Group and the Jim Stevens Group, while Saturday's lineup includes the USAF Starlifter Jazz Band, Tony D and the Groove, the Santana tribute band Stantana, and blues from guitarist and singer Vince Martin. (Full disclosure: Yr. humble StLJN editor will be playing keyboards with Martin. Consider yourself warned.)

Also on Friday, singer Coco Soul opens a two-night engagement at Jazz at the Bistro. Soul (nee Rochelle Walker) is known mostly as an R&B singer, former host of the open mic event Cafe Soul, and occasional performer in musical theater at venues including the Black Rep, Stages and Westport Playhouse. The promo blurb for her Bistro debut suggests that "her jazz influences, coupled with a strong R&B and soul background will surely delight listeners," but to these ears, the songs on her MySpace page sound more like straight R&B, albeit with the occasional brass background and/or trumpet obbligato.

Elsewhere on Friday, singer and pianist Bruce Hornsby and his band the Noisemakers are playing at The Pageant - you can read my Riverfront Times Critic's Pick on that show here - and singer Cheri Evans is at Robbie's House of Jazz

The most significant jazz show of the week, however, happens on Saturday, when the Jazz Crusaders (pictured) play at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. With original members Joe Sample, Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson reuniting for the first time since Henderson left the band in the mid-1970s, this tour definitely counts as a special occasion. And with Jazz St. Louis offering tickets at half price, the least expensive seat is only $17.50, which is quite affordable. For more about the Jazz Crusaders, including videos of performances of six of their best-known songs, see this post from last Saturday.

Also on Saturday, pianist and singer Curt Landes teams with singer Mary Dyson for a gig at Robbie's House of Jazz; and on Sunday, BB's Jazz Blues & Soups has Latin jazz in the early evening from Clave Sol.

Looking beyond the weekend, on Monday the Sessions Big Band will be back at BB's, and on Tuesday, singer Sylvia McNair will give a special cabaret performance in the Sheldon Concert Hall's upstairs ballroom,

The third annual Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival has been scheduled for Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12 in and around the main square in downtown Belleville, Illinois. The fest will run from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday.

Jazz this week: Peter Martin, Terence Blanchard, Eugene Chadbourne, Belleville's Wine Dine and Jazz Festival, and more

There's quite a bit of notable jazz and creative music on tap this week in St. Louis, including several free events that should help stretch your live music-listening and/or entertainment dollars a bit farther, certainly a good thing in these tight-money times

The first of those freebies is tonight, when pianist Peter Martin opens this year's Whitaker Music Festival with a free outdoor concert at Missouri Botanical Garden. The St. Louis native is known for his work backing major jazz headliners such as singer Dianne Reeves and trumpeter Chris Botti, but he's also maintained ties to his hometown, recording as a leader in the past for the local MAXJAZZ label.

Martin was one of a number of St. Louis musicians, including bassist Neal Caine and trumpeter Jeremy Davenport, who had relocated to New Orleans in the 1990s to build their careers. After Hurricane Katrina, he and his family moved back to St. Louis, and continue to live here.

However, Martin's busy touring schedule means he rarely plays local gigs, so there should be an especially good turnout for this show, for which he'll be performing with Victor Goines on saxophone and clarinet, St. Louis' own Montez Coleman on drums, and Reginald Veal on bass. In case of rain, check the Garden’s website at www.mobot.org or tune in to radio station WSIE (88.7 FM) for cancellation information. (Incidentally, Martin also has a new self-released solo piano CD that's just come out; for more on that, see this post.)

UPDATE - 6/3/09, 3:30 p.m.: Via email, Martin tells StLJN that his concert this evening at the Missouri Botanical Garden has been canceled due to rain. Instead, he and his band will perform a free indoor concert starting at 7:30 tonight at the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington. The doors open at 6:30 p.m..

Also tonight, trumpeter Terence Blanchard (pictured) and his group start a four-night stand continuing though Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro. A New Orleans native who embraces both his hometown's venerable traditions and more contemporary forms of jazz, Blanchard is considered by fans and critics to be among the first rank of current jazz trumpeters; he's also well-regarded in and out of the jazz world for the soundtracks he's composed for numerous films helmed by director Spike Lee.

Blanchard has played St. Louis before, at the Bistro and the Sheldon Concert Hall, and by all accounts, he delivers the goods in a live situation - so, if you're going to pay to see just one jazz event this week, this would seem to be the one. For more on Blanchard and some video samples of his playing, see this post from a couple of weeks ago.

On Thursday, there are more free events downtown, starting at 5:30 p.m., when the Jeff Anderson Trio kicks off a month-long series of free Thursday shows being presented by the Sheldon Concert Hall outdoors at the Old Post Office Plaza, 801 Locust between 8th and 9th streets.

The free concert is scheduled to run for about an hour, which theoretically should give you plenty of time to head west a dozen blocks or so in order to catch multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser Eugene Chadbourne, who will be performing free shows at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.at the Schlafly St. Louis Brewery and Tap Room.

If you're already a Chadbourne fan, chances are you're already making plans to be there. If you don't know the man's work, but are intrigued by the idea of an artist who brings together free jazz, rockabilly, folk, noise, and a dozen other genres, spiked with surreal humor and progressive politics, then see this post for more about him and some video samples of assorted Chadbournia.

On Friday and Saturday, the second annual Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival takes place in and around the public square in downtown Belleville, IL It's a free event that features local and regional jazz musicians; this year's lineup includes singer Anita Rosamond, Two Times True with pianist Carolbeth True; Wild Cool and Swingin'; singer Mary Dyson with the Brock Walker Trio, Tony D. and the Groove Merchants, and more. For more, see this post.

Back in downtown St. Louis, the St. Louis Jazz Cafe this weekend has 2Smooth, with saxophonist Rod Tate and guitarist Gregg Haynes, on Friday, and singer Erin Bode and her group on Saturday.

Looking beyond the weekend, on Tuesday, there are two more free events worth noting. At 7:00 p.m., the Jazz St. Louis CD Listening Club will meet at Borders, 1519 S. Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood. JSL executive director Gene Dobbs Bradford will lead the discussion of this month's featured CD, Atomic Basie by the Count Basie Orchestra. That should wind down in plenty of time to catch saxophonist Bennett Wood and his group over at The Gramophone in another of the no-cover-charge shows the club is presenting in conjunction with Jazz St. Louis.

As always, these are just some of the notable events happening over the next few days, and, since it's early in the month, band and venue schedule information for June is still arriving here at StLJN HQ;. So, to see the most recently updated list of jazz-related events in St. Louis this weekend and beyond, please visit the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar.

(If you have calendar items, band schedule information, news tips, links, or anything else you think may be of interest to StLJN's readers, please email the information to stljazznotes (at) yahoo (dot) com. If you have photos, MP3s or other digital files, please send links, not attachments.)

Organizers say Belleville fest drew 10,000

It appears that the city of Belleville's first-ever Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival, held yesterday in the southern Illinois town's public square, was a success. An article in the Belleville News-Democrat quotes one of the organizers as saying that the free event, which featured music from ten local and regional jazz groups, drew a crowd estimated at 10,000 people before 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. You can read the whole story here.

Jazz this week: Zappa Plays Zappa; Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival; Erin Bode; Trombone Shorty; Gary Dammer; Linda Presgrave; and more

It's a busy week for jazz and creative music in St. Louis, with concerts, a free festival, and club gigs that will offer something for musical tastes ranging from traditional jazz to mainstream to seriously warped.

Speaking of warped, for yr. humble editor, a confirmed Zappaphile since my teens, the highlight of the next few days will be the return of Zappa Plays Zappa to The Pageant on Monday evening. Based on the band's 2006 appearance at the same venue, I can heartily recommend the ZPZ show to anyone who enjoys, or just is curious about, Frank Zappa's music. Along with the core band led by Frank's eldest son Dweezil, the special guest on this year's tour is singer-guitarist Ray White, so expect at least a portion of the show to be devoted to FZ's output from the 1980s, when White was a mainstay of his touring ensemble. However, the 2006 tour successfully incorporated music from just about every period of Zappa's long and diverse career, and I'd look for a similarly varied mix this time around as well.

That said, there are plenty of other noteworthy shows happening this week, starting this evening when singer Erin Bode (pictured) opens the 2008 Whitaker Music Festival series of free concerts at the Missouri Botanical Garden. It's a busy week for Bode, whose new CD The Little Garden will be available for the first time anywhere at tonight's show. She's also appearing at the Cabaret at Savor on Thursday, and will be doing concerts on Friday and Saturday at the Innsbrook Music Institute with her band and members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

If your taste runs more toward straight-ahead swing, veteran St. Louis trumpeter Gary Dammer, best known for his long-running big band, will lead a small combo dubbed the I-70 Jazz Connection in performances on Friday and Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro .

To sample a varied musical menu in a single outing, check out the first-ever Wine, Dine and Jazz Festival, which will take place on Saturday in and around the square in downtown Belleville, IL. The free event starts at 11:00 a.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m., featuring performances by the Craig Russo Latin Jazz Project, Anita Rosamond, Good 4 The Soul, Brian Owens, the Nathan Jatcko Trio, Phil Dunlap's Legacy Jazz Quintet, Mary Dyson, John Farrar & Straight Eight, and the Jazz St. Louis All-Stars student ensemble.

Also on Saturday, New Orleans brass man Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews brings his funk band Orleans Avenue to the Broadway Oyster Bar, and pianist and St. Louis native Linda Presgrave returns home from her current base in NYC to lead her quartet in a performance at Cookie's Jazz and More.

Last but not least, on Sunday the St. Louis Jazz Club will present the traditional jazz sounds of pianist Jean Kittrell's Old St. Louis Levee Band in a show at the Moolah Shrine Center, 12545 Fee Fee Rd.
