StLJN Saturday at the Movies:
Dave Weckl in a Buddy Rich tribute,
plus Clark Terry's "Mumbles"

Recent installments of this feature have concentrated on previews of upcoming shows by musicians coming to town, but this week, we've got videos of a couple of St. Louis natives doing what they do best.

Today's first clip features drummer Dave Weckl performing with keyboardist Joe Zawinul and the Buddy Rich Band. They're doing Zawinul's composition "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" as part of a tribute concert dedicated to Rich, held October 14, 1989 at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. It's a chart that was a staple for the Rich band for many years, so if you've only heard Cannonball Adderly's version of the song, here's a chance to check out a completely different take on a familiar piece of material while also admiring the skills of Mssrs. Zawinul and Weckl.

Down below is something that's kind of silly and just plain fun - trumpeter Clark Terry doing a short version of his famous comedy scat-singing piece "Mumbles," taken from the PBS series Legends of Jazz, which, after a year, seems finally to be releasing some clips to the various online video sharing services. There are many audio recordings of Terry doing this, but being able to see him certainly adds to the enjoyment of "Mumbles," as his facial expressions are an integral part of his delivery.
