NPE leader Henry Claude is also music director for the University's dance program, and during these performances he and fellow percussionists Adam Rugo and Matt Henry will collaborate with several of the dancers on an improvised piece.
The event will also feature dances set to a variety of other music, including a new composition by St. Louis' own Tory Z. Starbuck and recordings from Sigur Ros, Operatica, Arvo Part and the Mancini Orchesta, as well as "Leonardo's Chimes," which is described as:
"an ambitious multi-media work by David Marchant, senior lecturer in dance, and composer John Toenjes of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The piece utilizes motion-tracking technologies (programmed by Ben Smith) that allow Marchant to move through virtual "hot spots," thus activating prerecorded sounds then selected and layered by Toenjes. "The computer has been programmed to change the pitches and general direction of the music depending on how the mover/performer chooses to play Leonard's Chimes on any given night," Marchant explains. "The result is a spontaneous 'conversation' among the musician, dancer and programmer."For more information, performance times and ticket prices, see this news release or call (314) 935-6543.
