Ray Kennedy goes solo

Ray Kennedy

Pianist Ray Kennedy, a St. Louis native who's been a mainstay of guitarist John Pizzarelli's band for what seems like forever, has left Pizzarelli to start his own group, according to this review of a recent Pizzarelli show published today in the New York Times.

In addition to his work as a sideman with Pizzarelli and others, Kennedy has previously recorded as a leader for the Victoria and MAXJAZZ labels. Digging around a bit more, I learned that earlier this year St. Louis' Music Masters studio completed mastering for a new Kennedy quartet CD featuring Ray's brother Tom on bass, Howard Alden on guitar and Miles VanDiver on drums. The project is listed as an upcoming release by Victoria Records; though there's no street date shown, one would presume the CD will be out soon.

Kennedy also has a new Web site in the works, though there's nothng there yet except for some laudatory quotes from critics and some contact info. If and when StLJN gets more info, you'll be the first to know.
