David Sanborn on Legends of Jazz tonight

David Sanborn

Alto saxophonist and St. Louis area native David Sanborn is one of the featured guests on tonight's installment of Legends of Jazz, the new PBS series hosted by Ramsey Lewis and featuring a smorgasbord of top jazz talent. The program is seen locally in St. Louis at 10:30 p.m. Fridays on KETC, Channel 9.

Sanborn is no stranger to television, having proved himself to be a polished broadcaster in the late 1980s as host of Night Music (aka Sunday Night), the late night NBC series still remembered fondly by many music fans for its eclectic and adventurous mix of guests. This week's LoJ epsiode is entitled "The Altos," and features bebop master Phil Woods alongside Sanborn. The promos have showed a snippet of the two performing what I'm pretty sure is Horace Silver's classic composition "Senor Blues," which seems like a good meeting place between the two men's usual styles.

While I've generally enjoyed the LoJ episodes I've seen so far - and I'll have a little bit more about another of them in an upcoming post - this one seems especially promising. Unfortunately, unlike their policy with regard to many of their prime time programs, KETC is not repeating any of the Legends of Jazz episodes more than once. So if you can't watch live, don't forget to set your Tivo or VCR.
