Pollstar previews coming jazz attractions

Brian Auger

Another of our periodic perusals of Pollstar, the online service offering tour information for bands and musicians, has provided a sneak peek at some of the jazz attractions set to visit St. Louis later this year and in 2007.

On Wednesday, August 2, Finale will host jazz-rock organist Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express. Auger's been a personal favorite of mine since the 1970s, and based on his last St. Louis appearance a couple of years ago at Generations, he's still in fine, fleet-fingered form.

The club has also re-booked two performers who appeared there during the past year, with vocalist Diane Schuur set to perform on Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2, and trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and his band Big Bop Nouveau scheduled for another Thanksgiving week stand, playing on Wednesday, November 22 and Friday and Saturday, November 23 and 24.

Meanwhile, Jazz St. Louis has yet to officially announce the 2006-07 season for Jazz at the Bistro, but a few bookings are already showing up on Pollstar. In addition to the performances by Jane Monheit (September 20- 23) previously mentioned here, it looks like the Bistro will also be hosting the heavily hyped trio The Bad Plus (January 3-6, 2007) as well as return visits from guitarist John Scofield (March 28-31, 2007) and pianist Ahmad Jamal (April 25-28, 2007).

A word of caution: As always, schedules may shift and bookings are subject to change, so this information should not be considered confirmed until officially announced by the venue. Jazz St. Louis is expected to announce their 2006-07 season later this month, and as soon as StLJN gets the details, you, O valued reader, will be the first to know.
