Pyeng Threadgill booked at the Bistro in July

Pyeng Threadgill

Perusing the concert information service Pollstar last night in search of coming attractions for the St. Louis area, I see that Pyeng Threadgill has just been booked for a one-nighter at Jazz at the Bistro on Friday, July 7. The singer-songwriter is the daughter of saxophonist/composer Henry Threadgill and dancer/choreographer Christina Jones, a founding member of the Urban Bushwomen. She's recorded two CDs - one a tribute to Delta bluesman Robert Johnson - and you can hear some audio excerpts here.

I don't know yet if this booking is a one-off, or if Jazz St. Louis is planning a summer series of some sort again this year at the Bistro. However, I hope to get a call back yet today from someone at JSL with more details, and when I get 'em, you will too.

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m., 4/14/06: JSL marketing coordinator Adam Roach called back, and says that the Threadgill gig is one of three projected mid-summer shows featuring "contemporary female vocalists." Details are still being worked out, and as they are revealed, we'll pass them along.

Also gleaned from Pollstar was some news about shows later this year from two more female vocalists. Specifically, the Bistro will host a return engagement by Jane Monheit from September 20-23, and Dianne Reeves, whose band includes St. Louis' Peter Martin as pianist and music director, will perform at Washington University's Edison Theater on Saturday, September 30.

(Remember, as is always the case with Pollstar listings for several months in the future, this information may be subject to change. No concert date should be considered official until confirmed by the venue or presenter.)
