Charles McPherson, NIU Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Sheldon on April 9
Charles McPherson
This just in: Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson will be in St. Louis on Sunday, April 9 to perform at the Sheldon with the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble.
McPherson, a veteran of more than a decade with Charles Mingus, is a bebopper extraordinaire who's considered by many to be the heir to Charlie Parker, so much so that he was tapped by director Clint Eastwood to perform on the soundtrack of his film biography of Bird. As for the NIU Jazz Ensemble, they're under the direction of Ronald Carter, the widely respected jazz educator and clinician who's well known in this area for his stint as band director for East St. Louis High School. A number of musicians who studied under Carter have gone on to professional careers, and I'd bet that he's got this bunch of student musicians playing like pros, too.
Tickets are on sale now through Metrotix for $15 each; there's also a $25 ticket that includes admission to a post-concert reception.
