Jazz this week: Tony DeSare, Mardra Thomas' "Women In Jazz", top trumpeters on tap, and more

Tony DeSare

Vocalist and pianist Tony DeSare is the major touring jazz act in St. Louis this week, checking in to Jazz at the Bistro for performances on Friday and Saturday. DeSare got his showbiz start playing Frank Sinatra in an off-Broadway musical, and has since worked in a number of major jazz clubs and cabaret rooms across the country.

Also in the Grand Center neighborhood, vocalist Mardra Thomas presents her "Women In Jazz" program on Saturday morning as part of the Sheldon's "Family Concerts". Thomas will perform songs associated with a number of famous female jazz singers at the 11 a.m. concert.

Elsewhere in town, two of St. Louis' top trumpeters are bringing their respective bands to Cookie's Jazz and More in Webster Groves this week. On Thursday, the club will present Dan Smith's quintet, featuring vocalist Debbie Lennon, and on Saturday, it's Randy Holmes and Hard Bop Heritage, an excellent band that doesn't play out nearly enough these days.

For the bargain minded, Washington University's Jazz at Holmes series offers another in its series of free concerts on Thursday, this one by pianist Kara Baldus. In the nearby Delmar Loop area in U. City, Brandt's has scheduled veteran performers "Peanuts" Whalum on Thursday, Jeanne Trevor on Friday and Trio Tres Bien on Saturday. And as usual, many other favorite local perfomers are working this weekend, too, including Erin Bode, Tom Kennedy, Carolbeth True and more, and you can find out where by consulting the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar.

(If you're a musician, band, venue or presenter who'd like to get your event listed in the StLJN calendar, please email your news release or announcement to stljazznotes at yahoo dot com.)
