Notes from the Net: Cheek with Motian, downloadable Miles, Ehrlich on tour, and more

Chris Cheek

You know, it just wouldn't be a "Notes from the Net" update without at least a couple of Miles Davis-related items. So let's start this installment by noting another review of the Cellar Door Sessions box set, this one by PitchforkMedia.com. Though the site is known mostly for snarky reviews of rock bands, this piece is actaully pretty good. And those who don't mind wandering into gray areas to acquire their recorded music might want to check out this post from the blog The Charivarious Section, which features a bunch of links to downloadable Miles stuff....Saxophonist Marty Ehrlich is touring in Europe in the wake of the release of his latest CD, News on The Rail...And saxophonist Chris Cheek, another St. Louis native and a former student at Webster University, is featured on Garden of Eden, the new CD by famed drummer Paul Motian. Here are two reviews of the CD and, for good measure, a nice little New York Times profile/character study of Motian....Former Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra "creative conductor" Marin Alsop's work as the new music director and conducter of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is reviewed here.

We'll close out this installment with a couple of items that lack a St. Louis connection but are of general interest to jazz fans. As recounted in the New York Times, a report by the cultural committee of the Mayor's Bring New Orleans Back Commission "proposes that the city regenerate its pool of creative talent by finding jobs and shelter for artists and cultural institutions. It must repair damaged cultural facilities and build new ones, like a National Jazz Center and an expanded and enhanced arts district, the report says; market New Orleans as a world-class cultural capital; teach the arts and cultural traditions to the city's young people; and seek investment from national and international sources."..And finally, legendary saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman is doing a rare radio interview this Tuesday, January 24 with KRML radio in Carmel, CA. Coleman is set to sit down with DJ Leroy Downs at 5:15 p.m. PST, and you can listen to a live audio stream here.
