Download.com is well known as as one of the Net's most comprehensive and oft-used sources for downloadable freeware, shareware, and trial versions of software. But did you know that they also have a music section on the site that offers lots of free MP3s?
Like most free download sites, it's a mixed bag of stuff. Many of the jazz artists with free music available on the site are of the unknown or "emerging" variety, but there are some recognizeable names there, too. For example, in about two minutes time, I found interesting looking tracks from Roy Ayers, George Benson, Chicago's avant big band 8 Bold Souls, and former Frank Zappa keyboardist Don Preston.
The menu system has lots of musical categories and sub-categories to help users zero in on new artists they may enjoy in their favorite genres. And another plus is that any musician with original material can set up his or her own page to offer free downloads, similar to the old MP3.com. All in all, it's definitely worth a look, and you can check it out for yourself here.
