Though culturally and historically important to St. Louis music, the Black Artists Group produced relatively few recordings during its existence. One was the long out-of-print LP
In Paris, Aries 1973, recorded live during BAG's European sojourn by a lineup including trombonist Joseph Bowie, trumpeters Baikida Carroll and Floyd LeFlore, saxophonist Oliver Lake, and drummer Charles “Bobo” Shaw.
I'll confess that I'd never even heard of this record, so I was fascinated to read the
review/reappraisal just published in
Point of Departure, a relatively new Web zine from jazz critic Bill Shoemaker, a familiar name for his work with
Jazz Times,
down beat, and many other print publications. His Web venture, which
started last September, contains eight or ten articles per issue, and all are worth reading. Recommended.
