Jazz this week: St. Louis' jazz women,
a free-improv film score, and more

Erika Johnson

Maybe I'm only noticing it due to the lack of touring jazz acts in town, but there are a whole lot of gigs this week under the leadership of St. Louis' female jazz musicians and vocalists. For starters, Mae Wheeler is performing Friday and Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro, while Erin Bode does a two-night stand at Finale. On Friday night, Erika Johnson fronts Ptah Williams' trio at Cookie's Jazz and More; pianist Carolbeth True performs at Crossings Taverne and Grille; and Jeanne Trevor sings at Brandt's. On Saturday, Kim Massie is at Cookie's and the Leslie Maclean Trio takes over at Crossings. So, if you're in the mood to hear some female vocals and/or piano players this week, you are definitely in luck.

Of course, there are some other gigs worth noting, too. On Thursday night, trumpeter Dan Smith brings his group with vocalist Debbie Lennon back to Cookie's. On Friday, New Music Circle presents a screening of the 1927 silent film The Cat and the Canary with live improvised musical accompaniment at the St. Louis Art Museum auditorium.

And in what could be interpreted either as a bold attempt to build on the excitement of Friday night, or as an astoundingly inept scheduling move that will cannibalize their own potential audience, NMC also has a show scheduled for Saturday night at Christman Studios featuring improvising musicians Gail Brand (trombone) and Morgan Guberman (voice).

To see what else is on tap this week, check the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar. And if you're a musician or venue who'd like to have your event(s) listed in the calendar, email your info to stljazznotes at yahoo dot com.
