Finale adds touring acts in November

Jo Ann Daugherty

Finale Music and Dining has added three touring jazz acts to their November schedule, including one St. Louisan-made-good and two performers with a Kansas City connection.

On Wednesday, November 9, the club will host saxophonist Eric Person, a St. Louis native who's recorded with jazz luminaries such as Chico Hamilton, Ronald Shannon Jackson and Dave Holland, as well as working as a sideman for rock/R&B singer Ben Harper. Person's own band Meta-Four recently released their debut CD, Live at Big Sur.

The following Wednesday, November 16, pianist Jo Ann Daugherty makes her St. Louis debut. Daugherty now lives in Chicago, but for a while called Kansas City home. And vocalist Karrin Allyson, who will perform at Finale two nights later on Friday, November 18, still uses Kansas City as her base.

It's good to see Finale mixing some younger and/or lesser-known touring jazz performers in among the bigger names like McCoy Tyner and Maynard Ferguson. I'd like to see them book a few more St. Louis-based jazz groups on the nights they've been featuring cover bands and tribute acts, though. And though I enjoy a little Vegas-style swing as much as the next guy, I'd sure like to know what the deal is behind the club repeatedly re-booking three different acts that all derive their primary musical inspiration from Frank Sinatra and/or the Rat Pack. Is there really that much listener demand for that sort of thing?
