Jazz at local wineries

Dave Black

With fall colors peaking soon, a lot of people will be thinking about heading out to one of our local wineries to enjoy the fall scenery, a beverage or two, and perhaps some live entertainment. The wineries down Route 94 and in Augusta are probably the best known, so much so that crowding both on the road and at the destination can be a problem on nice fall days. And as nice as some of these spots may be, most of them feature rock, blues or folk music on the weekends.

Fortunately for those who don't like mob scenes, there are a number of other, as yet lesser-known wineries in both Illinois and Missouri, and some of them even hire jazz musicians. For example, on Saturday, October 22, you could head over to Aviston, IL, where the Hidden Lake Winery is featuring guitarist John Farrar and vocalist Kevin Bowser from 7 p.m to 11 p.m. (They'll play there again on Friday, October 28, too.)

Or on Sunday, October 23, motor down south south to the River Ridge Winery in Commerce, MO (near Cape Girardeau) to hear guitarist Dave Black perform from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. And if you can't get out this weekend or next, the Peaceful Bend Vineyard in Steelville, IL will host a performance by Visions Jazz, which includes Bowser on vocals and saxman Vince Sala, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 5.

Do you know of any other local wineries that feature live jazz? If so, please leave a note in the comments, or email me at stljazznotes at yahoo dot com. While it's probably too late in the season to put together a comprehensive list of performances for this year, I'd like to gather more information on which wineries feature jazz for future reference.
