J. Scheidegger Center arts series to feature Branford Marsalis Quartet, Tower of Power

The J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts at Lindenwood University today announced the 2021-22 season schedule for their touring artists series, and there are at least a couple of shows of potential interest to StLJN readers.

The biggest "get" from a jazz fan's perspective is the Branford Marsalis Quartet, who will close out the series next spring with a concert on Thursday, April 14.

Marsalis and company (pictured) will be immediately preceded on the schedule by legendary funk and soul band Tower of Power, who will perform at Lindenwood on Saturday, March 19.

Single ticket prices for Marsalis and TOP both start at $15 for rear balcony/obstructed view seating and go up to $95 per person for "platinum" seating.

The series also will include a holiday show from swing revivalists Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Thursday, December 23, as well as six other performances featuring country music, comedy, magic, and more.

Single ticket sales via the Scheidegger Center box office will begin on Tuesday, August 3, and there's also a "Pick-A-Pack" option that offers a discount when purchasing tickets to four shows at the same time. You can see the season brochure for the series online here.

Jazz St. Louis announces 2021-22 schedule

Jazz St. Louis this week announced their season schedule for 2021-22, with normal operations set to resume this September after the long shutdown necessitated by the COVID pandemic.

Several of the artists who were canceled in the spring of 2020 when lockdowns began have been re-booked for the upcoming year. So St. Louis audiences finally will get the chance to see famed vocal group Manhattan Transfer in the intimate confines of JSL's Bistro, along with debut performances at the venue from singer and pianist Kandace Springs, pianist Connie Han, and singer Nicole Henry.

The schedule also includes two productions that originally were intended for what would have been the 2020-21 season - a celebration of the great trumpeter and St. Louis native Clark Terry, whose birth centennial was in December 2020; and "Jazz St. Louis @ 25," a birthday party for the entire organization, now scheduled to close out the 2021-22 season. Both will feature all-star ensembles put together especially for the occasion.

Other highlights will include the return (after more than a decade) of singer Sara Gazarek, who's coming off the most critically acclaimed album of her career; the local debut of the Eubanks Evans Experience, featuring guitarist Kevin Eubanks and pianist Orrin Evans; and a week of shows from trumpeter and St. Louis native Keyon Harrold, who was named "creative advisor" to Jazz St. Louis earlier this year.

JSL also once again will co-present a series of shows with the Cabaret Project of St. Louis, including appearances by cabaret grande dame Marilyn Maye and the Grammy-nominated singer Stacey Kent.

All of which still leaves room for many other familiar favorites, too. And so, trumpeter and singer Jeremy Davenport will be back from New Orleans for Thanksgiving weekend; trumpeter Jim Manley will present his annual holiday show in December; and The Bad Plus will return as the first touring act to play the club after New Year's Day, albeit in a still-unknown configuration after parting ways with Orrin Evans earlier this year.

Other returning acts that have played the Bistro multiple times before will include the fusion band Yellowjackets; Latin jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez; pianist Kenny Barron, this time with his trio; vibraphonist Warren Wolf; and bassist Christian McBride, who will be revisiting his Ray Brown tribute band with pianist Benny Green and drummer Greg Hutchinson.

Musicians making their second appearances as headliners at the Bistro - this time with five-night runs - will include pianists Harold Lopez Nussa and Matthew Whitaker and steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier, who'll be joined by the Funky Butt Brass Band's horn section.

The Sheldon announces 2021-22 schedule

After more than a year of presenting mostly livestreaming performances due to the COVID pandemic, The Sheldon has announced its schedule of concerts for the 2021-22 season, starting in September.

The hall's "Rhythm & Jazz" series will include performances from New Orleans drummer Herlin Riley (Saturday, November 20); singer Dianne Reeves (Saturday, January 22); "Bessie, Billie & Nina - Pioneering Women in Jazz," starring singers Charenée Wade,  Camille Thurman, and Tahira Clayton (Saturday, March 3); and "The Great Guitars," with guitarists Martin Taylor, Frank Vignola, and John Jorgenson (Saturday, May 7).

In addition to these shows, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra (pictured) will perform in a non-subscription series concert on Thursday, October 21.

The Sheldon's "Coffee Concerts" series of Tuesday and Wednesday morning performances also will include some shows of interest to StLJN readers, with appearances scheduled for singers Erin Bode (October 12 & 13), Dean Christopher (November 9 & !0), Janet Evra (March 15 & 16) and Anita Jackson (April 18 & 20).

Subscriptions to the "Rhythm & Jazz" series are $160 each for orchestra seating, $140 for the balcony, while a "Coffee Concerts" subscription will be $75 for orchestra seating, $65 for the balcony. In addition to these two series, the Sheldon's 2021-22 schedule also includes slates of folk and classical concerts; see their website for details.

New series subscriptions will go on sale on Monday, June 7 via the Sheldon box office and Metrotix, with the date for single ticket sales and single ticket pricing still TBA.

New Music Circle announces 2020-21 season schedule, with all shows streaming online

New Music Circle has announced their schedule for the 2020-21 season, which will see the venerable presenting organization going all online for their 62nd year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

NMC plans to present online performances twice a month on their YouTube channel, starting on Monday, October 5 with a trio led by Angel Bat Dawid, clarinetist, composer and vocalist affiliated with Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) who's also been part of recent shows by a revived Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Then on Monday, October 9, NMC will present a collaboration involving video creator Waterbod and Belleville's Kingston Family Singers.

More local artists will be on tap on Monday, November 9, with a video compilation featuring works by Kevin Harris, Sarah Downen, former St. Louisan John Wiese,  Fiat_Lx, and more. Two weeks later on Monday, November 23, percussionist Kaleb Kirby and electronic musician JoAnn McNeill will present solo sets.

On Monday, December 7, percussionist Claire Rousay and saxophonist Michael Foster will perform together, making up for their St. Louis date originally scheduled for this past April but cancelled due to the pandemic lockdown.

NMC then will wrap up 2020 on Monday, December 21 with a program featuring a solo set from vocalist Charmaine Lee, plus more from John Wiese.

Programming for the new year will get underway on Sunday, January 10, with another show making up for one cancelled this season, featuring saxophonists Ken Vandermark (pictured) and Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey doing solo and collaborative works.

Next up on Sunday, January 24, bassist Damon Smith, a recent transplant to St. Louis, and Nashville-based saxophonist Jayve Montgomery each will play solo sets.

More solo performances will be spotlighted in February, with guitarist and banjo player Wendy Eisenberg and guitarist Kee Avil on Monday, February 8, and St. Louis' own JJ Hamon and Louis Wall on Monday, February 22.

The season continues on Monday, March 8 with an event featuring a solo performance from Nashville bassist Matt Nelson , plus a duo set from violinist Alex Cunningham and guitarist Mark Shippy.

Two weeks later, St. Louis-based electronic musicians Parisian and Oxherding will perform solo sets on Monday, March 22.

The final program of the season, planned for April but with the exact date still TBA, will feature the STL String Collective.

All events will be free to view, but NMC will be accepting donations to help finance their continuing activities.

Sheldon Concert Hall announces 2020-21 season schedule

The Sheldon Concert Hall has announced their 2020-21 season schedule, and it includes a number of performances of interest to StLJN readers.

From a jazz fan's perspective, the season effectively starts with the annual Friends of the Sheldon Benefit, this year featuring guitarist Pat Metheny, on Saturday, October 17.

Next up is another show designated as a "special concert" (i.e. not part of any subscription series), as the Count Basie Orchestra will perform on Friday, November 6.

The "Rhythm & Jazz" series officially gets underway the following week with the the Philadelphia Reunion Band, featuring organist Joey DeFrancesco, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, pianist Orrin Evans, and drummer Lil John Roberts, on Saturday, November 14.

The series also will include "The Great Guitars" featuring Martin Taylor, Frank Vignola and John Jorgenson on Saturday, January 30; "Bessie, Billie & Nina: Pioneering Women in Jazz," with singers Charenée Wade and Tahira Clayton and saxophonist Camille Thurman, on Saturday, March 6; and singer Kurt Elling on Saturday, May 1.

The late-morning "Coffee Concerts" series will begin with performances from singer Erin Bode on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 14, followed by singer and impressionist Dean Christopher’s “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime: A Tribute to Dean Martin" on Tuesday, November 10 and Wednesday, November 11.

After that, it's the holiday offering "Winter Wonderland" with musical theater performers Zoe Vonder Haar, John Flack, Ben Nordstrom, Emily Kuhn and Steve Neale on Tuesday, December 8 and Wednesday, December 9.

The series continues in the new year with bassist and singer Janet Evra on Tuesday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 17, and singer Anita Jackson on Tuesday, April 20 and Wednesday, April 21.

Other performances of potential interest to jazz and creative music enthusiasts include the return of new music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, on Friday, January 15; tabla player Zakir Hussain on Saturday, April 1; and St. Louis' own The 442s on Wednesday, April 7.

Tickets for the benefit gala with Pat Metheny are $200 for patrons, and are on sale now. Concert-only tickets will be priced from $55 to $100, and will go on sale Friday, August 8.

Subscriptions to the "Rhythm & Jazz" series are $140 to $160, and "Coffee Concerts" subscriptions are $65 to $75. New subscription sales will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 11 via phone at 314-533-9900 and online at thesheldon.org. The Sheldon also offers a “Choose Your Own” option that allows tickets buyers to include shows from multiple series, including "Rhythm & Jazz," folk, classical, and world music.

Single tickets for the "Rhythm & Jazz" series are priced from $30 to $50, depending on the performer and the seat, and will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8. Single tickets for "Coffee Concerts" are $15 and $18, and go on sale the same day.

Jazz at Holmes series at Washington University announces Fall 2019 schedule

The Jazz at Holmes series of free concerts at Washington University has announced their schedule for Fall 2019.

The series will get underway next Thursday, September 12 with a concert by pianist Ptah Williams at Holmes Lounge on the Wash U campus. Following the pattern of recent years, the Fall 2019 schedule will present a mix of local/regional jazz and creative music talent with some visiting performers.

Drawing on Wash U faculty member and series programmer William Lenihan's connections to the jazz scene in Europe, the Fall 2019 schedule will include a performance by Italian vibraphonist Marco Pacassoni (pictured) on Halloween night.

New Music Circle announces 2019-20 season

New Music Circle has announced the schedule for their 2019-20 season, which will be the organization's 61st year of presenting performances of contemporary music.

The 2019-20 season will get underway with the St. Louis debut of Chicago-based cornetist, composer, and vocalist Ben Lamar Gay (pictured, top left) and his quartet on Saturday, October 5 at Off Broadway.

Next up is guitarist Fred Frith, who will make his first St. Louis appearance in many years on Saturday, December 14 at Joe's Cafe.

The new year will begin with a return visit from pianist Matthew Shipp, who will give a solo performance on Friday, January 24 at the 560 Music Center.

The following month, composer and percussionist Sarah Hennies and interdisciplinary artist and composer Merche Blasco will perform separate sets as part of a shared bill on Friday, February 28 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

Two more local debut performances will happen in March, starting with Kuzu, a trio including guitarist Tashi Dorji, percussionist Tyler Damon, and saxophonist Dave Rempis that will perform on Wednesday, March 11 at Joe's Cafe.

A couple of weeks later, NMC will present composer, vocalist and harmonium player Amirtha Kidambi's Elder Ones, with soprano saxophonist Matt Nelson, bassist Nick Dunston, and drummer Max Jaffe, on Saturday, March 28 at Xavier Hall on the St. Louis University campus.

The season will conclude with performances by saxophonist Michael Foster and percussionist Claire Rousay in April, and the Eric Revis quartet, featuring Revis on bass, Ken Vandermark on saxophones, Kris Davis on piano, and Chad Taylor on drums, in May, with dates and locations for both shows still TBA.

Single tickets for the first three shows of the season are on sale now via the NMC website, and there also are two different membership/subscription packages that include tickets that can be used at any performance.

New Music Circle kicking off 2019-20 season with party & fundraiser on Tuesday, August 20

New Music Circle will mark the beginning of their 61st season with a party and fundraiser at 6:00 p.m. next Tuesday, August 20 at the Tick Tock Tavern, 3459 Magnolia Ave on the south side.

The free event will feature the announcement of NMC's 2019-20 season schedule, with music from guest DJs NNN Cook, Limewire.prime, and 18&Counting.

NMC also will raffle off various prizes including CDs, LPs, and tickets to upcoming concerts. All the proceeds from drinks sold from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Tick Tock Tavern will go to support New Music Circle concerts and workshops throughout the year.

While admission to New Music Circle's season kickoff party is free, organizers are requesting that those wishing to attend RSVP via the event's Facebook page.

Jazz St. Louis announces summer bookings, 2019-20 subscription schedule

Jazz St. Louis today announced their subscription series for the 2019-20 season, featuring many returning favorites as well as some St. Louis debuts.

Perhaps the most intriguing group making their first local appearance next year will be Artemis (pictured, top left), the all-star, all-woman ensemble featuring pianist Renee Rosnes,  trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen, bassist Noriko Ueda, drummer Allison Miller, and on select gigs, singer Cécile McLorin Salvant. They'll perform at the Bistro starting Wednesday, October 9 through Sunday, October 13.

Others making their Bistro debuts next season will be drummer Nate Smith and his band Kinfolk (December 18-22), the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (January 22-26), trumpeter Etienne Charles (March 4-8), and pianist Connie Han (April 29 - May 3).

Another major highlight undoubtedly will be the appearances of the Manhattan Transfer (pictured, center left) the Grammy Award winning vocal group who previously have performed here only in larger venues like the Touhill Performing Arts Center and the Fox Theatre. They'll do a week of shows starting Wednesday, April 1 through Sunday, April 5,

Veteran favorites returning next year will include The Bad Plus, once again as the first touring act of the New Year, appearing from January 8-12; plus saxophonist Joshua Redman, violinist Regina Carter, guitarist Pat Martino, pianist and singer Freddy Cole with saxophonist Houston Person, trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Sean Jones, and percussionist Poncho Sanchez.

In addition, newer talents returning for their second headlining appearances at the Bistro will include singer and St. Louis native Alicia Olatuja (pictured, bottom left), singer Nicole Henry, and pianist Harold López-Nussa.

Tickets for three different subscription series are available now, with single tickets scheduled to go on sale Wednesday, August 7. Other non-subscription shows for 2019-20 presumably will be announced at a later date.

Sheldon Concert Hall announces schedule for 2019-20 season

The Sheldon Concert Hall's just-announced 2019-20 season will include four concerts featuring touring artists in a newly renamed "Rhythm and Jazz" series, plus various local jazz performers as part of its mid-week "coffee concerts" and Saturday matinee series.

Singer Cécile McLorin Salvant (pictured) will be the first jazz artist to perform next year, kicking off the series with a concert on Saturday, October 5.

Salvant will be followed by the NYC-based band Mwenso & the Shakes with guest singers Brianna Thomas and Vuyo Sotashe and dancer Michela Marino Lerman on Saturday, November 9.

Though perhaps not as well-known as many of the other acts booked for next year, the Shakes have earned a following in New York with late night sessions at Dizzy's in Jazz at Lincoln Center featuring a mix of jazz, blues, R&B, and other genres.

After that, the new year will bring pianist Christian Sands’ trio in a tribute to Errol Garner on Saturday, February, followed by the SFJAZZ Collective, who will perform on Saturday, March 14 with a program drawing on music from two albums released 50 years ago, Miles Davis' In a Silent Way and Sly and the Family Stone's Stand.

The current edition of the Collective's ever-evolving lineup includes trumpeter Etienne Charles, tenor saxophonist David Sanchez, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Edward Simon, guitarist Adam Rogers, bassist Matt Brewer, and drummer Obed Calvaire, plus vocalist Martin Luther McCoy.

The Sheldon's mid-morning "coffee concerts" for the 2019-20 season will include singer Kim Fuller and pianist Carolbeth True on Tuesday, October 5 and Wednesday October 17; guitarist and singer Tommy Halloran’s Guerilla Swing on Tuesday, November 12 and Wednesday, November 13; pianist Adam Maness' trio doing a tribute to Dave Brubeck on Tuesday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 29; and non-subscription performances by Miss Jubilee on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22.

The Saturday matinee series will offer performances by singer Feyza Eren in a Valentine's Day themed show on Saturday, February 13, and The 442s on Saturday, May 9.

Finally, programs designated as "special concerts" will include the annual Friends of the Sheldon Benefit, which will feature trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singer Jane Monheit on Saturday, October 26; and a performance by The 442s on Wednesday, October 30.

Subscription tickets for the Sheldon's various 2019-20 series will go on sale next month, with single tickets for most concerts available starting at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10 via Metrotix.

New Music Circle announces season schedule for 60th year

New Music Circle has announced the lineup for their 2018-19 season, and they've got some intriguing shows planned for their 60th anniversary as a presenting organization, including a rare appearance by multi-instrumentalist and composer Anthony Braxton in October, and a return visit from flutist Nicole Mitchell, this time bringing her own band to St. Louis for a concert in March.

Founded in 1959 and still the longest continuously operating independent presenter of new music in the USA, NMC will preview their 60th year for the public at a fundraiser and kickoff event on Tuesday, August 14 at Tick Tock Tavern.

The anniversary season proper gets underway a few weeks later, with cellist Okkyung Lee, multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, percussionist Chris Corsano, and guitarist Bill Orcutt featured in two nights of what might be called tag-team improv, with different duo pairings on Friday, September 21 at Joe's Cafe and Saturday, September 22 at Off Broadway.

Next up is Braxton (pictured, top left), who will perform with harpist Jacqueline Kerrod on Monday, October 8 at Xavier Hall on the St. Louis University campus. A veteran educator who taught for many years at Mills College and Wesleyan University, Braxton is known as a conceptualist and challenger of musical paradigms, and in addition to the performance, he'll also present a post-concert talk.

The following month, instrument builder and composer Ellen Fullman will perform on Friday, November 9 at 560 Music Center.

Fullman (pictured, center left) presumably will be offering St. Louisans their first experience of her Long String instrument, which consists of dozens of metallic strings up to 70 feet long that are put under tension and played with rosin-coated fingers.

The calendar year ends with a concert by Lonnie Holley, an Alabama native known for his visual art as well as his music, on Saturday, December 1 at Off Broadway. Often employing found objects and recycled materials in his artwork, Holley first gained attention in the 1980s among followers of what's often called "outsider art," and in the last decade, he's moved into performance as a keyboardist and vocalist who improvises his material on the spot.

To start 2019, NMC will present in January a double-bill featuring separate sets from two young composer/performers, Sarah Davachi and Lea Bertucci, though the exact date and venue still are TBA.

Then in February, local audiences will get their first chance to hear NYC-based trumpeter Jaimie Branch, who's been getting noticed in the jazz press for her recent work as both leader and collaborator in several different ensembles. She'll be teamed up with Chicago cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and Norwegian percussionist Ståle Liavik Solberg for a show that has a date - Saturday, February 9 - but with the venue still TBA.

After that, Nicole Mitchell (pictured, bottom left), who performed in St. Louis a couple of years ago with cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Mike Reed, will return, this time leading her own quintet for a concert on Friday, March 22 at Xavier Hall.

Also returning will be St. Louis native Andrew Lampert, who shared an NMC bill with violinist C. Spencer Yeh in April of this year. He'll be back in 2019 to present a program of "curated experimental films" on either Friday, April 12 or Saturday, April 13 at Webster University's Winifred Moore Auditorium.

Finally, the organization's 60th anniversary year will wrap up in May with an "NMC Showcase" of St. Louis artists, date and venue still TBA.

All shows will start at 8:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Single tickets can be purchased online via NMC's website or at the door, and are priced at $20 regular admission, $10 for students and "struggling music supporters," except for the Braxton concert, for which prices will be $25 and $15. NMC also offers "membership" and "benefactor" packages that include tickets for the entire season at a discounted per-show price.

Gaslight Cabaret Festival announces Fall 2018 season

The Gaslight Cabaret Festival this week announced the schedule for their fall 2018 series, which will feature ten different performers and a total of fifteen performances over five weekends in October and November.

The series kicks off with performances on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20 of a new version of "Broadway's Greatest Hits," with William Michals returning with a new female counterpart, Jillian Louis, and a new set of songs.

Other notable return engagements include Tony Award-winning Broadway performer Faith Prince (Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27) and singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb (Sunday, October 28), who wrote 1960s and '70s pop hits such as "By The Time I Get to Phoenix," "MacArthur Park," "Wichita Lineman," and "Up, Up and Away."

The series will mark the St. Louis cabaret debuts of Carrie St. Louis (Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3), who's starred in Broadway shows such as Wicked, Rock of Ages, and Kinky Boots, and Christina Bianco (Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17), whose comedic impressions of various famous female vocalists have gotten more than 24 million views on YouTube.

Other shows will include Bob Gerchen performing "Joe Cocker: Never Forget" on Thursday, November 1; Kansas City trumpeter and vocalist Lonnie McFadden, backed by pianist Ptah Williams' trio, on Thursday, November 8; and former St. Louisan Katie McGrath, doing a new show called "Aunt of the Year" on Friday, November 9.

In addition, St. Louisan Ken Haller will reprise his "Happy Haller Days!" on Sunday, November 10 and Sunday, November 18; and longtime vocal coach Caroline Zarinelli will debut her show "In Pursuit of Magic" on Sunday, November 11.

All shows begin at 8:00 p.m. at The Gaslight Theater. Single tickets range from $30 to $45, depending on the show and performance date, and are on sale now.

Jazz St. Louis announces 2018-19 season

Jazz St. Louis has announced its schedule for the 2018-19 season.

The biggest "get" for the year would seem to be pianist Chick Corea, who will kick off the fall season with performances on Tuesday, September 11 and Wednesday, September 12 at the Ferring Jazz Bistro (as it is now officially known since Jazz St. Louis apparently has retired their long-running "Jazz at the Bistro" branding).

Other notable return appearances will include teenage piano phenom Joey Alexander (October 12 & 13), keyboardist Robert Glasper (December 12-16), saxophonist and singer Grace Kelly (February 13-17), saxophonist Branford Marsalis (April 2-4), pianist Brad Mehldau (April 10-14), back for his first St. Louis trio shows since 2011, and pianist Chucho Valdes (February 5-7), who's playing the Bistro for the first time since 2001.

Making their Bistro debuts will be the acclaimed young singer Jazzmeia Horn (May 8-12), who has enjoyed a meteoric rise since winning the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition in 2015; singer Nicole Henry (November 7 & 8); and drummer Mark Giuliana's quartet (March 27-31).

In a significant change to past scheduling practices, shows featuring touring artists that are part of JSL's main subscription series now will run for five nights instead of four, with two additional performances added on Sundays.

Jazz St. Louis also will continue the collaboration they began this year with Cabaret Project St. Louis, teaming up to present a series of shows that will include appearances by local favorites Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway, Marilyn Maye, and Belleville native Lea DeLaria.

Sheldon Concert Hall announces 2018-19 season

The Sheldon Concert Hall has announced their season schedule for 2018-19.

Keyboardist Jon Batiste will kick off the hall's jazz subscription series on Saturday, October 20. Other concerts in the series will feature singer Dee Dee Bridgewater (pictured), performing music from her recent release paying tribute to Memphis soul (Saturday, November 17); singer Dianne Reeves (Saturday, February 9); and pianist Eliane Elias (Saturday, March 2).

In addition, saxophonist James Carter will return to perform with pianist Peter Martin's trio in a non-subscription "special concert" on Sunday, May 19.

The hall's "Coffee Concerts" series, presented on select Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, also will feature some musicians of potential interest to StLJN readers, including Cornet Chop Suey (October 9 & 10); singer Feyza Eren (November 13 & 14); and The Gaslight Squares (April 9 & 10), while the Saturday matinee series will include concerts from singer Anita Jackson (February 2) and guitarist Dan Rubright of the Wire Pilots (April 6).

Season tickets for the jazz series are $160 orchestra, $145 balcony; Coffee Concerts are $70 orchestra, $60 balcony; and Saturday Matinee tickets are $25 for adult subscriptions, $10 per child. Jazz St. Louis adds shows to Bistro's winter/spring schedule, including Keyon Harrold, Ken Page, and more

Jazz St. Louis has announced additions to the winter/spring 2018 schedule for the Ferring Jazz Bistro, filling out the previously announced slate of touring acts with more than a dozen shows featuring St. Louis musicians and singers

Most notably, trumpeter Keyon Harrold (pictured, top left) will return home to perform Wednesday, February 7 and Thursday, February 8, and singer and actor Ken Page will make his debut at the Bistro with performances on Wednesday, April 4 and Thursday, April 5.

Harrold, a native of Ferguson now living in NYC, has gained considerable career momentum in the last two years, thanks to his participation in the soundtrack for Don Cheadle's film Miles Ahead and the recent released of The Mugician, his highly anticipated second album as a leader.

Page (pictured, bottom left) is a St. Louis native famed for his Broadway roles in the original casts of Ain't Misbehavin' and Cats (as well as in many other musicals including The Wiz and Guys and Dolls), and for his voice acting in Tim Burton's animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas.

He's been developing a cabaret show for the last several years, and presented a version of it in 2014 at the Gaslight Theatre as part of the Gaslight Cabaret Festival.

Also of note, the "Whitaker Jazz Speaks" series will continue with a program called "Harlem’s Renaissance" on Wednesday, April 18. The free event will begin with a discussion led by Gerald Early of Washington University, followed a performance of music from the period by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Bessie Smith, and Louis Armstrong.

As for the rest of the schedule, keyboardist Nathan Jatcko will make his Bistro debut as a leader with a standalone date on Thursday, April 19, and The Peoples Key and guest multi-instrumentalist Lamar Harris will reprise their "Jazz Memories of Michael Jackson," first staged in 2014 at the Kranzberg Arts Center, on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10.

Other local performers getting return engagements include the Funky Butt Brass Band "and Friends" (Friday, March 9 & Saturday, March 10), singers Brian Owens (Wednesday, March 21 & Thursday, March 22) and Denise Thimes (Friday, March 23 & Saturday, March 24), drummer Kevin Bowers (Friday, April 20 & Saturday, April 21), the JazzU Big Band student ensemble (Sunday, April 29), the Route 66 Jazz Orchestra (Thursday, May 17) and trumpeter/vocalist Dawn Weber and Friends (Friday, May 18 & Saturday, May 19).

Lastly, there's a new program called "Juice Box Jazz" for kids in pre-K through elementary school. It will be presented on three Sunday afternoons - January 21 with members of the Funky Butt Brass Band, March 4 with keyboardist/guitarist Adam Maness, and April 8 with trumpeter Riley Mulherkar - and will include musical performances, snacks, and jazz-themed activities that "will have the whole family learning and loving what jazz music is all about."

Jazz at Holmes announces Fall 2017 schedule

The Jazz at Holmes series at Washington University has announced their schedule of free concerts for the Fall 2017 semester.

The series will begin on Thursday, September 14 with British bassist Tony Grey (pictured), who's probably best known as a member of pianist Hiromi's working band.

Grey will be accompanied by Jay Oliver on keyboards; Wash U faculty member and Jazz at Holmes series director William Lenihan on guitar; and Roger Guth on drums.

In addition to Grey and various shows featuring a selection of St. Louis performers, the Fall 2017 series also will include themed programs exploring Italian film music; the intersection of experimental jazz and contemporary classical; and folk and protest songs of the 1960s.

New Music Circle announces 2017-18 season

New Music Circle has announced their 2017-18 season of concerts.

The venerable presenting organization for experimental and contemporary music will open their 59th season with a concert by trombonist Steve Swell's quintet on Saturday, October 7 at The Stage at KDHX.

Swell's band (pictured) is something of an all-star aggregation of veteran avant-jazz musicians, with William Parker on bass, Dave Burrell on piano, Jemeel Moondoc on saxophones, and Chad Taylor on drums.

Next up is electronic musician, composer, and former St. Louisan John Wiese, who will perform on Saturday, November 11 at the University Theatre in Saint Louis University's Xavier Hall. Wiese will create "a site-specific composition that includes over 20 local musicians, utilizing both traditional and non-traditional instrumentation."

NMC will close out 2017 with a performance by Battle Trance, a quartet featuring tenor saxophonists Travis Laplante, Patrick Breiner, Matthew Nelson, and Jeremy Viner, on Saturday, December 2 at The Luminary.

The new year then will begin with a concert by flute player and composer Claire Chase's International Contemporary Ensemble on Saturday, January 13 at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

The performance will feature a trio version of ICE with Chase, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, and pianist Cory Smythe presenting works by Pauline Oliveros and Morton Feldman, plus a new Smythe/Sorey duet and another new composition by Sorey for drums and contrabass flute.

NMC's season will continue with a performance by electronic musician and vocalist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe on Saturday, February 24 at Urb Arts in the Old North neighborhood.

The final two shows in the series have some details yet to be confirmed, but they will feature saxophonist Mats Gustafsson's free-jazz power trio The Thing sometime in March at Off Broadway and Chicago-based saxophonist Matana Roberts in a solo performance on Saturday, May 19 at a venue TBA.

The season also will include public workshops and other events featuring some of the visiting musicians, the specifics of which will be announced at a later date.

Unless otherwise noted, tickets for all NMC shows are $20 general admission, $10 for students or "struggling music supporters," and can be purchased online or at the door.

Gaslight Cabaret Festival announces fall series

The Presenters Dolan have announced the fall 2017 series of the Gaslight Cabaret Festival, which will include seven different shows over five weekends at the Gaslight Theater in the Central West End.

The series will begin with jazz singer Paula West on Friday, October 13 and Saturday, October 14.

West (pictured), who's known for her ability to interpret a wide range of material, from the Great American Songbook to contemporary pop and rock, will be accompanied by pianist and music director Bruce Barth, bassist Ben Wheeler, and drummer Montez Coleman.

Next up is Alice Ripley, who won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Next to Normal, and was in the original Broadway casts of Les Misérables, Sunset Boulevard, Side Show, The Rocky Horror Show, and American Psycho. She'll take the stage of the Gaslight Theater on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21.

The following weekend, singer/pianist Eric Comstock and singer Barbara Fasano will present a show called "Downton Abbey Road: The Best of Britain" on Friday, October 27. As the name suggests, the show is built on songs from an eclectic selection of British songwriters, from Noel Coward and Anthony Newley to the Beatles and Sting.

After that, Ken Haller, one of two St. Louis performers in the series, will present a new holiday-themed show, "Happy Haller Days!" on Thursday, November 2 and Thursday November 9.

Singers Farah Alvin and William Michals will be the next to take the festival stage, bringing their show "Broadway's Greatest Hits of All Time" from Feinstein's in New York City to St. Louis on Friday, November 3 and Saturday, November 4.

For the series' final weekend, former St. Louisan Katie McGrath, who moved to NYC last year, will return on Friday, November 10 with her show "Significant Others," and Emily Skinner, who's been nominated for Tony Awards for her work in Broadway shows including Side Show, Billy Elliot and The Full Monty, will wrap things up with a performance called "Broadway Her Way" on Saturday, November 11.

Jazz St. Louis announces 2017-18 season schedule

Jazz St. Louis has announced the touring performers scheduled for the 2017-18 season at Jazz at the Bistro.

In what is undoubtedly the season's biggest "get," the organization will be one of the presenters for the previously announced concert by pianist Herbie Hancock in August at Powell Symphony Hall.

Also as announced earlier this year, the Bistro will host pianist Orrin Evans' debut as a member of The Bad Plus next January.

With those bits of news already public for weeks, the season announcement (which covered only touring acts and did not include any of the locally based performers that presumably will be playing the venue next year) contained very few surprises, but here are the key takeaways:

* Kicking off in late September with a four-night run from Yellowjackets, the schedule is heavy on familiar names such as Terrell Stafford, Cyrus Chestnut, Sean Jones, Houston Person, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, and Poncho Sanchez, all of whom have performed at the Bistro multiple times over the years.

Other than Hancock, the season's most notable shows would seem to be the return of vocal group Take 6 (pictured, top left), who performed at the Bistro in 2011 and will be back for a week in December; and the quartet co-led by guitarist John Scofield and saxophonist Joe Lovano (pictured, center left), who will play the club in April.

* Just three acts - the fewest ever that yr. StLJN editor can remember - will be making their Bistro debuts as headliners. Saxophonist and singer Grace Kelly (pictured, bottom left) and Cuban pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa are the complete newbies to the venue, while singer and St. Louis native Alicia Olatuja, who co-headlined a show this year at the Bistro with harmonica player Gregoire Maret, will be appearing at the club for two weeks next season.

She'll headline shows under her own name during Valentine's Day week (taking the slot occupied for years by Mardra and Reggie Thomas, and more recently by Erin Bode) and then will turn up again in April as a featured singer with drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.

* In addition to Olatuja, three other St. Louis area natives also will return next season to headline at the Bistro. Trumpeter Russell Gunn, who grew up in East St. Louis, will return from his current home in Atlanta to play a week in November with a band including drummer Jimmy Cobb, the last surviving musician who played on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.

Later that month, trumpeter Jeremy Davenport will be back from New Orleans to perform his usual Thanksgiving weekend shows. And next spring, drummer Marcus Baylor's Baylor Project will be featured for a week of performances in March.
