Dennis Owsley reading St. Louis jazz history on Wednesday, April 14 at Urban Eats Cafe

Jazz DJ, historian, photographer and author Dennis Owsley will read from his book City of Gabriels: The History of Jazz in St Louis, 1895-1973 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 at Urban Eats Cafe, 3301 Meramec St.

Published in 2006 through a collaboration between Reddy Press, the Sheldon Concert Hall and the Sheldon Art Galleries in St. Louis, City of Gabriels (pictured) is the only comprehensive history of jazz in St. Louis. The April 14 event is part of the cafe's "Well-Read Wednesdays" series, and will include a discussion and the opportunity to purchase a copy of City of Gabriels and have it signed by the author.

"After Hours" event at Urban Eats Cafe to benefit The Sheldon's educational programs

The Urban Eats Café, 3301 Meramec Street in St. Louis' Dutchtown neighborhood, will raise money for the art and music educational programs of the Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries by hosting the Downtown Dutchtown Business Association’s "After Hours" event on Wednesday, June 17.

The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in conjunction with Urban Eats' First Anniversary Celebration Street Party. The café will offer "free appetizers, drink specials, attendance prizes, live music by Dizzy Atmosphere and other musicians, and more." The entire menu will be available, including paninis, flatbread pizzas, wraps, smoothies, beer, and wine, with a portion of the food and drink proceeds benefiting Sheldon art and music educational programs.

In addition, this event also kicks off an ongoing "Giveback Partnership Program." During the coming year, Urban Eats Café will donate to the Sheldon the equivalent of 5% of the amount of purchases made by anyone who designates “The Sheldon” on their receipt at the café.
