Red Holloway concert at Kiener Plaza canceled

The free concert previously announced by St. Louis City Jazz that would have featured saxophonist Red Holloway performing this Friday, August 29 at Kiener Plaza has been canceled.

Although as of this writing the show is still listed on the group's Web site, callers to the contact number (314-757-0555) listed on the site are being told that the show is off. When I called, the man who answered what apparently is someone's personal mobile phone said that St. Louis City Jazz hoped to reschedule the event "after the first of the year" in 2009.

StLJN Saturday at the Movies: Dave Koz' "Silver Lining," plus Red Holloway plays "Nica's Dream"

This week's videos offer previews of two saxophonists with very different styles who both will be performing in St. Louis this month. The clip up top spotlights Dave Koz, who will play The Pageant next Friday, August 8 to close out DJ and impresario Rick Sanborn's 2008 "Smooth Summer Party" series. Koz is seen here doing the tune "Silver Lining" at a festival in Maui, Hawaii.

The second video shows Red Holloway, who is scheduled to perform a free concert on Friday, August 29 at Kiener Plaza under the auspices of the new presenting organization St. Louis City Jazz. This clip of Holloway playing the Horace Silver composition "Nica's Dream" was recorded at a concert in Tokyo, Japan.

Veteran saxophonist Red Holloway (pictured), lauded by fans and critics as a master of old-school bebop and blues, will be returning to St. Louis next month to perform a free concert at Kiener Plaza on Friday, August 29.

The concert will be the first production presented by St. Louis City Jazz, a not-for-profit organization founded last year. Their Web site says that group's mission is to "expand the culture of live entertainment by providing venues and events that will feature both local and national artists at all competitive levels. Allowing the history to come alive by bringing together the universal language of music to all cultural genres."

Over the course of his long career, Holloway has performed and recorded with a host of well-known blues and jazz artists, including Sonny Stitt, Clark Terry, Lionel Hampton, Memphis Slim, Brother Jack McDuff, Willie Dixon, Junior Parker, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Lloyd Price, John Mayall, and B.B. King. His most recent appearance in St. Louis was in July 2007 at Jazz at the Bistro.

Jazz this week: The Cunninghams, BAG II, Red Holloway, Erin Bode, and more

There's lots of good music on tap this weekend in the Gateway City, so let's go right to the highlights:

Tonight, The Cunninghams perform at the Sheldon Concert Hall. The jazz vocal duo - St. Louis native Don Cunningham and his wife Alicia - will be joined by a number of guest stars including the Carolbeth True Trio, pianist Marion Miller, and saxophonist Chuck Tillman, and you can read more about them here and here.

Also tonight, singer Erin Bode gives a free concert at St. Louis Place Park, with Bob Bennett's Swing 'n Soul as opening act.

On Friday, BAG II presents a free concert paying tribute to the late St. Louis saxophonist Maurice Malik King at the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site. See this post for more details.

On Friday and Saturday, tenor saxophonist Red Holloway (pictured) performs at Jazz at the Bistro. Holloway's specialty is old-school bop & blues, and he's also got a nice touch with ballads, a satisfyingly greasy tone and a real sense of showmanship.

Other noteworthy shows this weekend: On Friday, Dizzy Atmosphere plays a free outdoor concert as part of the Webster Groves Gazebo Series, and bassist Tom Kennedy brings his trio to Brandt's. And on Saturday, singer Anita Rosamond returns to Finale Music and Dining, while Jeff Anderson and Positive Energy appear at Cookie's Jazz and More.

StLJN Saturday at the Movies: Red Holloway's got the "Cleanhead Blues", plus Clark Terry's "In A Mellowtone"

This week's videos feature a couple of jazz elders who are still active and proving the enduring value of two of the music's fundamental components, swing and the blues.

The first clip features tenor saxophonist Red Holloway, who will be performing at Jazz at the Bistro on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. The footage is from 1995, and the song is "Cleanhead Blues," a number originated by the late singer and saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson that has subsequently become something of an anthem for follicly impaired men everywhere.

Down below, we showcase another venerable jazzman, St. Louis' own Clark Terry in a swinging version of the Duke Ellington standard "In A Mellowtone", a song that he no doubt has played many times, both while in and out of the Duke's employ.

StLJN Saturday at the Movies: Red Holloway plays "Now's The Time" plus Euge Groove's "Chillaxin"

This week's videos are all about the tenor, as we showcase clips from two saxophonists who will be performing in St. Louis this summer.

On top, it's the venerable Red Holloway, working out on the Charlie Parker classic "Now's The Time" in a performance recorded back in 1995. Holloway is an old-school player who excels at blues and bebop, and this clip offers a nice taste of both. St. Louis listeners will have a chance to hear him in person when he plays at Jazz at the Bistro on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14.

Down below, we have a clip of another tenor man from a completely different generation and stylistic background, smooth jazz saxophonist Euge Groove. In this video, date unknown, he plays a tune called "Chillaxin". Groove will make a return visit to St. Louis later this month, performing at Finale Music and Dining on Wednesday, June 20.
