StLJN Saturday Video Showcase:
"Rising Stars" in concert, part two

Today, let's continue our look at some of the musicians recognized in the "Rising Star" categories of the 2020 DownBeat Critics Poll. (You can see part one, featuring live sets from a half-dozen more of this year's "Rising Star" winners, here.)

First up is "Rising Star" winning trombonist Nick Finzer, who's seen in the first video up above performing with his band Hear & Now in June 2018 at Blue Whale in Los Angeles.

After the jump, you can check out a set from Lage Lund, winner in the "Guitar" category, and his trio that was recorded during the Ballard Jazz Festival on May 31, 2019 at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle, WA.

Next, it's soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen, performing with his sextet in December 2019 at Dizzy's Club in NYC's Jazz at Lincoln Center.

That's followed by a set from "Rising Star" winning organist Akiko Tsuruga, performing with her quartet in June of this year via a livestream from Smalls in New York City.

The penultimate video features "Rising Star" male vocalist: Leslie Odom Jr., who's known for starring in the musical Hamilton on Broadway but also recently released an album of R&B, jazz and pop-flavored sounds. Odom's video was recorded in November 2019 streaming live from Paste Studio in New York.

The sixth and final video showcases a solo concert by Aaron Diehl, the 2020 "Rising Star" on piano. Diehl's performance was streamed in May 2020 by the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and features him playing rags by Scott Joplin and Eubie Blake, stride piano in the style of James P. Johnson, Thomas “Fats” Waller and Willie “the Lion” Smith, and more.

You can see the rest of today's videos after the jump...
