Multi-instrumentalist Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, is coming to St. Louis to perform at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 9 at The Ready Room.
The younger Kuti (pictured), now 53, grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and got his start in the family business at age 15, playing saxophone in his father's band Egypt 80. He formed his own band The Positive Force in 1986 and released his first album as a bandleader in 1989.
Kuti's 2003 recording Fight To Win, a collaboration with hip-hop performers including Common and Mos Def, earned him the first of four career Grammy nominations in the world music category.
Following a hiatus from 2004 to 2008, during which he polished his skills on trumpet and keyboard, Kuti's three subsequent albums also have been nominated for Grammys in the same category, including his most recent, No Place for My Dream, which was released in 2013.
Tickets for Femi Kuti and The Positive Force at the Ready Room are $25 and are on sale now via Ticketfly.
