Today is the 88th anniversary of the birth of
Miles Davis, the most famous and historically significant jazz musician to come from the St. Louis area and one of our favorite subjects over the years here at StLJN. In years past, we've featured various performance videos of Davis as a birthday tribute; this year, we've got three films about the trumpeter that help put his music into cultural and historical context.
Up above, there's a video embed featuring
The Miles Davis Story, a comprehensive documentary about Davis' life and work that was produced in 2001 for Channel 5 in England.
Below after the jump, you'll find another, shorter biographical documentary,
Miles Ahead - The Music of Miles Davis, from 1985, followed by
Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue, which looks at Davis' electric period through the lens of his performance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 29, 1970.
