Nigerian singer and guitarist King Sunny Ade (pictured), who helped popularize African music in the US and Europe during the 1980s, is back on the road and is bringing His African Beats to St. Louis to perform at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 at the Old Rock House, 1200 South 7th Blvd (between downtown and Soulard).Rooted in Nigeria's Yoruba culture, Ade's music was some of the first so-called "world" music to gain wide popularity in the West, and his breakthrough recordings Juju Music and Synchro System helped introduce instruments such as pedal steel, clavinet and synthesizer into African pop. Though international attention has waxed and waned in the years since Ade's first rush of popularity in the US, he has developed various business interests and a charitable foundation while continuing to perform and record, earning his second Grammy nomination in 1998 for Odu, a collection of traditional Yoruba songs.
