The big jazz event in St. Louis this week is the return of The Bad Plus to Jazz at the Bistro, where they'll perform two sets a night through Saturday. Bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King have developed a signature approach to the piano trio format has made them one of the most talked-about groups in jazz over the last several years, and this week's appearances are likely to be well-attended, so if you're interested in going, I'd strongly recommend calling ahead for reservations.
As for other gigs, the news is a bit sparse so far, due to a combination of the usual post-holiday January slowdown in concert and club activity and the fact that several local spots that usually feature jazz, such as Cookie's and Brandt's, have yet to complete updates of their calendars for January.
In addition to the usual recurring weekly gigs, shows that have been confirmed include Swing Set at Erato Wine Bar on Friday night, and Kim Massie at Brandt's on Saturday. However, I'll be posting updated information to the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar as it comes in, so please check there for the latest.
(If you have calendar items, band schedule information, news tips, links, or anything else you think may be of interest to StLJN's readers, please email the information to stljazznotes (at) yahoo (dot) com. If you have photos, MP3s or other digital files, please send links, not attachments.)
