StLJN Saturday at the Movies:
Two from Clark Terry and Red Mitchell
This week's featured videos demonstrate the virtues and pleasures of simplicity, as St. Louis native Clark Terry teams up with the late bassist Red Mitchell to duet on two famous songs associated with Duke Ellington, "Take The A Train" and "Mood Indigo."
These tracks are from a 1987 program broadcast on German television, and they show how two great musicians can mine something interesting and entertaining from even the most familiar vein. I especially liked Terry's duet with himself during "A Train" as he alternates licks on flugelhorn and muted trumpet, but really, it's all good listening, and fun to be able to see up close, as well.
