This week, let's take a look a couple of relatively informal moments from two musicians who will be performing in St. Louis next month as part of the summer season at Jazz at the Bistro.
The first clip features St. Louis native Greg Osby at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, blowing some alto sax on a seemingly impromptu blues with Philly keyboardist Trudy Pitts. Osby will be bringing his own quartet to St. Louis to play the Bistro on Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7.
Today's second video features guitarist Russell Malone doing a very nice solo turn on, believe it or not, the BeeGees' disco-era hit "How Deep Is Your Love". According to the notes posted with the video, this was recorded January 25, 2004 at the New York Guitar Festival's Guitar Marathon at the 92nd Street Y's Kaufman Auditorium.
Malone slows down the tempo and takes full advantage of the tune's relatively complex chord structure, and it ends up working surprisingly well as a solo instrumental. He'll be in St. Louis on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 to perform at the Bistro and celebrate the release of another upcoming CD on the local MAXJAZZ label.
