More Miles Davis live recordings
available as free downloads

Once again, the fine music sharing blog Nothing Is has some sounds available for downloading that may be of special interest to St. Louis jazz fans. This time, proprietor James Benjamin is serving up a couple of bootleg live recordings of Miles Davis from 1975.

The first, recorded January 22, 1975, is called Another Unity. It features Miles on trumpet along with Sonny Fortune (soprano sax, alto sax, flute), Pete Cosey (guitar, percussion), Reggie Lucas (guitar), Michael Henderson (electric bass), Al Foster (drums) and James "Mtume" Foreman (congas, percussion). Tracks include "Funk", "Maiysha", "Turnaroundphrase/Tune in 5", "Ife", "Mtume", and the ever-popular "Untitled original".

The second, longer set, titled simply Bottom Line, July 11, 1975, and recorded at the NYC club of that name, has no personnel credits, but likely includes many of the same musicians heard on Another Unity. It also includes versions of all the tunes from that set, as well as "Right Off", "Willie Nelson", "Tune in 5" and "For Dave". As is typical for Miles' live shows from that period, there are lots of tunes segueing into one another, with themes popping up and reoccurring according to the leader's spontaneous directions.

As usual, these recordings likely will be available for just a limited time, so if you want 'em, go get 'em while the gettin' is good. And while you're there, please leave a comment or send an email to Mr. Benjamin saying "thanks"; he's posted a bunch of St. Louis-related music lately, and we certainly want to encourage him to keep up the good work.
