Jazz this week: Taylor Eigsti, local vocals and more

Denise Thimes

Blogger had more outages today - apparently they are rebuilding a database, or something along those lines - so I'm going to try to squeeze in a couple of posts as quickly as possible in case it goes down again.

The major touring jazz attraction in town this weekend is pianist Taylor Eigsti, who's playing Friday and Staurday night at Jazz at the Bistro. The Post-Dispatch's Calvin Wilson has an interview with Eigsti here, in which the young keyboard phenom discusses some of his influences, including Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and Phineas Newborn. Given Eigsti's tendencies toward florid filligree and baroque (in both the literal and figurative senses of the word) ornamentation, I guess it should be no surprise that those particular players are among his favorites, since all of them are known particularly for their technical wizardry. For another view of Eigsti, check this recent review of his latest CD from the Village Voice's Tom Hull. You can also hear an audio stream of "Juliette," a song from his previous CD, here.

Elsewhere in town, this weekend provides a good chance to catch a couple of female singers who don't do that many club dates, as Cheri Evans performs as Cookie's Jazz and More on Friday and Denise Thimes takes the stage at Finale Music and Dining on Saturday night. Brandt's is also down with the local divas this weekend, with Kim Massie singing on Friday and Amy Ehrlich on Saturday. Two more shows worth noting are smooth jazz saxophonist Tim Cunningham at Finale on Friday, and clarinetist Scott Alberici at Crossings Taverne and Grille on Saturday.

For a more detailed look at the weekend's gigs, please see the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar.
