Jazz this week: St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival, Tom Byrne, a treasure trove of trumpeters, and more

The big jazz event in St. Louis this week is the sixth annual US Bank St. Louis Jazz and Heritage Festival, which will take place Friday and Saturday in Clayton's Shaw Park. There will be another post previewing the Festival following this one, so for now, let's just note that the headliners include Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Friday and the Clarke/Duke Project, David Sanborn and Lizz Wright on Saturday; ticket prices start at $20 for general admission lawn seating; and the weather forecast for this weekend - mostly sunny, with high temperatures in the mid-80s - looks great for an outdoor concert.

The weather may be a good bit steamier tonight when guitarist Tom Byrne performs a free concert at Missouri Botanical Garden as part of the Whitaker Music Festival. But given that this concert series seems to grow in popularity every year, and that most St. Louisans are resigned, if not necessarily cheerful, when it comes to enduring the heat and humidity of our city, the show should be well attended anyway.

Elsewhere in town, it looks like a particularly good week to hear some of St. Louis' finest trumpet players in local clubs. Cookie's will present a couple of them, with the Dan Smith Quintet featuring Debby Lennon performing on Thursday and the Randy Holmes Quartet taking the stage on Friday. And on Friday night, Finale will feature the brassy sounds of trumpeter Jim Manley's Wild, Cool and Swingin'.

Also, it should be noted that the previously announced end date of Jeremy Davenport's stand at Busch's Grove is rapidly approaching. His Web site currently lists no performances beyond July 1, so while it's still possible his St. Louis engagement may be extended past the end of the month, it's equally possible that Davenport may be decamping from the swanky Ladue eatery in ten days. When StLJN learns more, we'll share it with you right here. In the meantime, Davenport will be performing at Busch's Grove tonight, tomorrow and Friday, though not on Saturday, which is listed on his site as a benefit concert for Goodwill.
