Jazz this week: Kurt Elling, Euge Groove,
John Ellis and more

Euge Groove

Time is a bit short today, so this post will just hit a few highlights.

Vocalist Kurt Elling will be at Jazz at the Bistro for two sets starting tonight through Saturday night. While his style of singing may not be everyone's cup of tea, if you like the work of Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson, Elling is definitely worth a listen. For a few more thoughts, see this recent post.

On Friday, smooth jazz saxophonist Euge Groove plays at Finale. Given that he's headlined shows here at larger venues - most recently, last year's Guitars and Saxes show at the Pageant - and his CDs have sold well, I'm guessing Groove will be a good draw, with fans filling up the relatively intimate confines of Finale fairly quickly. So, be sure to call ahead if you want tickets.

Then on Sunday, saxophonist John Ellis will perform at Erato, a venue on South Grand that hosts various types of live music once a week or so. Ellis is best known as a member of the Charlie Hunter Trio, and he did some nice work on tenor with that group, mixing modern jazz and R&B influences. Also, Erin Bode is listed as a guest performer on the show, and has been promoting it through her mailing list, so perhaps that's an additional musical reference point worth considering.

Also in the South Grand neighborhood, the 2006 edition of Ancora il Più Estinto continues on Thursday night at Dunaway Books. This is second of four Thursdays in May for the sound art performance/installation curated by Eric Hall and featuring a cast of dozens of local artists and musicians.

There's lots more going on this weekend; to see some of the other jazz and creative music events around town, please consult the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar.

(If you're a musician, band, presenter or venue who'd like to get your event listed in the Calendar, please email your news release or schedule information to stljazznotes at yahoo dot com.)
