Bistro reschedules Taylor Eigsti for June 9-10

Taylor Eigsti

Not sure when this was offically announced, but Jazz St. Louis has rescheduled young jazz piano phenom Taylor Eigsti to play Jazz at the Bistro on June 9 and 10. Eigsti had been set to appear at the club last November, but canceled due to a schedule conflict.

I'm not very familiar with Eigsti's work, but what little I have heard of him on CD suggests two things. First, he's certainly got a lot of chops. And second, like so many young musicians who get labeled as prodigies, he also tends to overplay, attempting to cram in a ton of flashy licks on every song whether they suit the music or not. (I'd suggest locking the kid in a room with a stack of Count Basie records and not letting him out until he understands the value of understatement and restraint.) Still, it's good to see the Bistro providing a venue for a new talent, albeit one that has already been externally vetted via serious amounts of hype in the jazz trade press, and I look forward to the chance to hear what Eigsti can do in person.
