Transcribing Terry's tunes

Clark Terry

Given that the upcoming Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival will include a number of student groups as well as professional guest artists, you can bet that trumpet players of all ages and skill levels will be in the audience when St. Louis native and jazz trumpet legend Clark Terry performs in concert on Saturday, April 22. Those musicians eager to analyze Terry's style (as well as laypersons who just enjoy reading little dots on paper) may want to check out this page devoted to Terry that was created by Jeff Helgesen, a trumpet player from up the road in the the Champaign/Urbana, Illinois area.

Helgesen has transcribed a number of Terry's solos, and offers free .pdf files of his transcriptions, along with information on the original recordings that include these specific solos, a short bio of Terry, and other materials. He's done the same for a number of other jazz trumpeters, so if you have an interest in that sort of thing, it's definitely worth a few minutes to browse his whole site.
