Although the primary focus of this site is and always will be jazz music, sometimes there are stories about the people involved with jazz that are also worth bringing to your attention. Don Wolff is known to jazz fans in St. Louis and across the Midwest as the host of KMOX radio's "Saturday Night Jazz Session" program, but he's a man of many facets. A criminal defense attorney by profession, Wolff is also active with various communiity organizations and takes a strong interest in social justice issues.
That's the side of Wolff now being heard on "Justice For All," a new program airing on KMOX at 8 p.m. Sunday evenings. The show's description says it aims to provide "a voice for the voiceless and seeks justice for those unfairly left unprotected by our legal system...Whether it’s the quality of a public school education, diversity in the workplace, exploring the record of our public servant or dealing with a violation of ones civil liberties, listeners can expect Don Wolff and his panel of guests explore all issues with a no holds barred approach." Sounds good to me, though an hour or two a week of locally produced concern for social justice hardly seems adequate balance for the massive amounts of syndicated right-wing poltical bilge pumped out by KMOX during certain other dayparts.
Wolff's April 23 show featured a discussion of race relations in the St. Louis area, and inspired this column from the Post's Sylverster Brown, who was one of the guests that evening. You can hear Wolff's new venture for yourself by tuning in to KMOX at 1120 on the AM dial, or by accessing their Internet stream here. (Note: Looks like KMOX is now requiring registration for access to their audio stream, so caveat auditor.)
