Kirk WhalumSaxophonist
Kirk Whalum is the biggest name performer playing in St. Louis this week, as he comes to town on Thursday and Friday to play a rare small club gig alongside his uncle Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum at
Brandt's Red Carpet Lounge. Since "Peanuts" is best known for playing standards and nephew Kirk earned his fame as a smooth jazz performer, it's hard to say exactly what they'll have on their musical menu, but the wide experience of both men, the intimate setting and the whole "family reunion" vibe should make for a unique experience.
And speaking of unique experiences, composer and installation artist
Michael Schumacher will be in town on Sunday to perform one of his extended "room pieces" from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Washington University's Tietjens Hall. The performance is presented by
New Music Circle, and they describe Schumacher's work as "computer-generated sound environments which evolve continuously. The wide range of sonic material lends itself to forms that fl ow through a wide range of moods, timbral combinations and textural densities. Schumacher uses multiple speaker configurations which relate the sounds of the installation to the architecture of the exhibition space." Schumacher also gets involved with manipulating sounds performed by live muscians, and on this gig he'll be joined by St. Louisans Tracy Andreotti on cello, Mike Murphy on synthesizers and guitar, and Glenn "Papa" Wright on percussion.
That's pretty much it as far as touring performers in St. Louis this week, but of course, there are many other gigs by locally based musicians that are worthy of your attention. For example, the monthly Mad Jazz series resumes this week at
Mad Art Gallery in Soulard with a Friday night performance by the Vince Varvel Trio, and the Bosman Twins will be at
Jazz at the Bistro on Friday and Saturday.
Elsewhere on the club scene:
Finale has the
Leslie MacLean Trio on Thursday night;
Cookie's will present trumpeter Dan Smith with vocalist Debbie Lennon on Thursday, and
Trio Tres Bien with
Danita Mumphard on Saturday; and
Crossings Taverne and Grille will have
Erin Bode on Thursday,
Carolbeth True on Friday and Jan Shapiro on Saturday.
As always, there's lots more to hear, so be sure to check the
St. Louis Jazz Notes calendar, too, OK?
