Byron Stripling to headline
benefit concert on March 8

Trumpeter Byron Stripling, known for his work with the Count Basie Orchestra and for playing Louis Armstrong on Broadway, will be in St. Louis nex t Wednesday, March 8 to headline a benefit concert at the Touhill Performing Arts Center.

The performance will also feature the student jazz bands from UMSL and Webster Groves High School, and all proceeds will go to the Children's Discovery Institute, a collaboration of St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine that focuses on accelerating cures for congenital heart disease, cancer, lung and respiratory disorders and musculoskeletal diseases in children. The concert is sponsored by Mercy Health Plans' Mercy MC+, which provides health insurance for more than 42,000 members in the 10-county St. Louis region.

In addition to his Basie and Broadway work, Stripling is known as a soloist with pops orchestras around the country, and currently serves as director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in Columbus, OH. He has also performed and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson, Buck Clayton, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and the GRP All Star Big Band.

There's no set ticket price or advance ticket sales for the concert; instead, donations will be accepted at the door. Sounds like a chance to hear some good music and help a good cause at the same time, so if you attend, please give generously.
