Jazz this week: Arturo Sandoval, Dave Stone Trio, Sandy Weltman & New Hamonica Jazz and more

Arturo Sandoval

The biggest touring jazz headliner in St. Louis this week is Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who will be performing two sets a night at Jazz at the Bistro through Saturday. Sandoval is a versatile and technically accomplished trumpet player who also puts on a good show, drawing on Latin, jazz, pop and even occasional bits of classical music. For more, this piece I wrote for the RFT previewing his last stop here in December 2004 pretty well sums up my take on him.

Sandoval may be the biggest name performing here this week, but there are also some notable gigs by St. Louis- based musicians, starting on Thursday night when guitarist Vince Varvel will perform a free concert as part of Washington University's Jazz at Holmes Series. Another budget-friendly gig happens on Saturday, when the Dave Stone Trio ventures outside their usual environs at Mangia Italiano to perform a no-cover-charge show at Schlafly's St. Louis Brewery and Tap Room at 21st and Locust in midtown.

On Saturday, Sandy Weltman brings his New Harmonica Jazz project, featuring Carolbeth True on piano, to Finale for two shows. "Amazing" doesn't quite adequately describe all the things Weltman can do with a $20 harmonica, but it's a start - and of course, True's trio is always quite good as well. Also on Saturday, guitarist Corey Christiansen will do his duo thing at Crossings Taverne and Grille, and Trio Tres Bien will be working at Brandt's.

And though it technically happens next week, now seems a good time to mention Monday's concert at Webster University, which will feature vocalist Jeanne Trevor and the Webster University Traditional Jazz Band - exact personnel unknown, but drawing from the fine pool of players on the school's jazz faculty - in a concert of music associated with Josephine Baker.

Of course, many of your other St. Louis favorites will be in action this weekend too, and you can find out where by consulting the St. Louis Jazz Notes Calendar, just updated Wednesday with the latest available info. And if you're a band, musician, venue or presenter who'd like to get your upcoming event(s) listed in the calendar, please email your news releases, schedules and/or other pertinent information to stljazznotes at yahoo dot com.
