Musicians, U. City mayor honor Wheeler

Brandt's Cafe and Red Carpet Lounge host emeritus Jay Brandt checked in via email with this report on the birthday tribute to Mae Wheeler held this past Sunday at the club:

"What a great event! (University City) Mayor Joe Adams presented Mae with a city proclamation making May 15th...Mae Wheeler Day. With over 35 performers honoring Lady Jazz it was one of the biggest jazz/blues/r&b events in the city...as Mae says..."it was magic honey...a day like today may never happen again...it was magic"."

By Brandt's account, the list of those who showed up to wish Wheeler a happy birthday included a bunch of her fellow vocalists, such as Denise Thimes, Kim Massie, Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, Jeanne Trevor, Gene Lynn, Barbara Carr, Babz Robnett, Marsha Evans, Wendy Gordon, Bill Tucker, Joy Bryant, and the trio Captivation as well as tap dancer Chris Green.

Among the musicians paying tribute to "Lady Jazz": keyboardists Tony Simmons, Arthur Toney, Pauline Stark, Harold Attyberry and Carolbeth True; drummers Mike Major, Larry Newsome, James Thomas and Jerome "Scrooge" Harris; saxophonist "Peaches"; violinist Christopher Voelker; guitarists Carol Eder, Dave Black, and Randy Bahr; and the East St. Louis Jazz Quartet.
