This week, the StLJN video spotlight shines on multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson, who will be in St. Louis to perform next Saturday, May 12 at The Pageant.
While some purists may find his mix of smooth jazz, funk and R&B to be un-challenging and/or overly commercial, Culbertson since his debut in the mid-1990s has developed a legion of fans who appreciate him for making enjoyable, groove-based music and putting on an entertaining show. His most recent St. Louis appearance was in October 2016, also at The Pageant.
Culbertson currently is touring in support of his latest album Colors of Love, which was released in February of this year and spotlights his acoustic piano playing on a collection of love songs and ballads.
The first video up above, released in January of this year to help promote Colors of Love, shows Culbertson in the studio performing the song "Through The Years" from the album.
After the jump, you can see excerpts from several of Culbertson's live shows from previous tours, starting with a clip recorded in September, 2015 at Pizza Express in London in which he kicks off a set with "Always Remember" from his 2008 album Bringing Back The Funk.
That's followed by a video from the 2017 San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival showing Culbertson performing "Get Ready" from his 2016 album Funk; another depicting the opening of his set at the 2016 Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Florida; and a full set recorded in November 2016 at the Mount Airy Lodge and Casino in Pennsylvania.
Last but not least, you can see an episode of Washington Full Circle, a local TV program in Washington DC, recorded in December 2016 that features an interview with and performances by Culbertson.
