New amphitheater in Alton
could be named for Miles Davis

If a proposal by a citizen's group is accepted by the Alton City Council, the amphitheater being built in Alton's new Riverside Park could be named after jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, who was born in the Illinois river town in 1926.

According to a story at Riverbender.com, Abe Lee Barham, who presented the proposal to the council, so far has gathered 324 signatures supporting the effort, adding:
“We’re hoping 4th Ward Alderwoman Alice Martin will bring the to resolution have the amphitheater named for Miles Davis.” Alton Park & Recreation Director Mike Drake offers his thoughts, “Maybe it’s not a bad idea. As Lee says, it does bring immediate credibility. Miles Davis is recognized nationwide.”
The story says amphitheater construction should be completed in March or April, adding that the city has been talking with Contemporary Productions about booking performers for the new venue. The precise date of the amphitheater's opening is contingent on the completion of the pedestrian bridge over Landmarks Boulevard.

While the City of Alton's Web site offers no way to contact city officials via email, interested parties can express support for the idea of naming the facility after Davis by writing to Alderwoman Martin, Mayor Don Sandidge, and the rest of the City Council in care of Alton's City Hall, 101 East Third Street, Alton, IL 62002.
