A new exhibit entitled "Juan William Chávez: Drawing Ra" is set to go on display in the History of Jazz Gallery at the Sheldon Art Galleries, located next to the Sheldon Concert Hall. The exhibit will open with a reception at the gallery from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15 and run through April 19.
"Drawing Ra" is a site-specific installation created by Peruvian-born artist Juan William Chávez, who also founded and serves as director of Boots Contemporary Art Space in St.Louis. According to the Sheldon's press release, the work is "inspired by the unique and unconventional jazz performer Sun Ra (pictured) and the historic Sheldon Concert Hall," and consists of "a 3-part work in the three-room Jazz Gallery space that includes a series of animated drawings inspired by a Sun Ra keyboard solo, video footage of The Sheldon’s acoustically perfect concert hall, as well as sculpture and drawing installations."
Gallery hours are 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, and one hour prior to Sheldon performances and during intermission. Admission is free. For more information, check out the Sheldon Galleries’ Web site.
