To commemorate the first anniversary of the passing of former St. Louisan John Hicks (December 21, 1941 - May 10, 2006), jazz journalist Bret Primack has produced a tribute to the pianist on his video blog, Bird Lives.
The tribute includes rare performance video of Hicks with Art Blakey, documentary footage from one of his last sessions (Streams of Expression), and clips from a concert by the Joe Lovano Nonet in Paris, as well as Primack's own memories and interviews with Lovano and Mulgrew Miller and Lovano.
You can see the video tribute to John Hicks in the embedded window below. And in other Hicks-related news, his musical partner and spouse, flute player Elyse Wood, has organized a tribute perfomrance dedicated to Hicks this weekend in NYC.
