Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, whose career in jazz spanned more than 50 years, has died at age 78. A native of Canada and resident of California, Ferguson appeared frequently in the St. Louis area in recent years, including serving as the opening week act for Finale Music and Dining, the Clayton club operated by his friend and personal manager, local music mogul Steve Schankman.
Ferguson will be remembered for his extroverted trumpet style, outgoing personality and exceptional ability as a high-note player, but also for the vast amounts of time he spent performing for and teaching young musicians in high schools and colleges across the country. You can read the Associated Press obituary, which includes several quotes from Schankman, here. No word yet on what Finale plans to do with the upcoming dates that were scheduled for Ferguson in November, but when there's an announcement, we'll pass along the details right here.
