Miles Davis to be inducted into
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday
The late trumpeter and East St. Louis native Miles Davis will become one of the newest members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when the Hall holds the induction ceremony for its class of 2006 tomorrow night (Monday, March 13) in New York City. Featuring what might very well be the first jazz performance ever at one of the R&RHOF's ceremonies, the evening will include a musical tribute to Davis, fronted by trumpeter Wallace Roney and including former Miles collaborators Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, Marcus Miller and Mike Stern, plus bassist Buster Williams.
Though Miles' former musicians and some members of his family are expected to attend, one person who may not make it to the event is Miles' eldest son Gregory, who's apparently feuding with his half-siblings and others who control his father's estate, as detailed in this story from the Village Voice. While other members of the family were comped, according to the article, Gregory Davis was offered the chance to purchase a ticket to the ceremony for $2000, but couldn't come up with the cash.
The ceremony will be simulcast to the R&R HOF's museum in Cleveland, and what is described as a "heavily edited" version will be shown on the cable network VH1 on Tuesday, March 21.
