A new, locally produced television show spotlighting performances from St. Louis jazz musicians and vocalists will begin airing on cable at the end of February. Jazz @ Cookie's will premiere on Charter Cable's channel 8 at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 26 and continue in that time slot each week for at least the next 13 weeks.

Hosted by jazz vocalist Valerie Tichacek, and produced by Tichacek and Owen Woodard, the initial group of 30-minute episodes includes live jazz performances by and interviews with artists such as Kim Portnoy, Hard Bop Heritage featuring Randy Holmes, Jeanne Trevor, Kevin Ward, Cheri Evans, Stephens and Foster, Tom Byrne, Sound Unlimited and Tichacek herself, as well as a "blues night" show from Uvee Hayes and Latin jazz performed by SL Son.

The project has been more than a year in the making, beginning with live footage shot from January through March 2005 at Cookie's Jazz and More, the Webster Groves club that serves as the show's setting. Tichacek said that she and Woodard would like to continue to air the first set of programs beyond 13 weeks, and to produce additional episodes, but are waiting to see how the program is received by viewers and, perhaps most important from the standpoint of economic viability, sponsors.

She said future plans may also include expanding the new episodes to one hour each, and making some of the video content available online for streaming and/or download. For now, you can see a video trailer and get more information about the Jazz @ Cookie's program and the featured artists by visiting the show's Web site.
