David Sanborn and Chris Botti
St. Louis jazz fans attending trumpeter Chris Botti's March 3 appearance at the Touhill Performing Arts Center are getting an unexpected bonus: Saxophonist David Sanborn is joining forces with Botti starting this week for a six-week run of concert dates that includes the performance here in the Gateway City. You can see details and a listing of all the tour dates here.
Sanborn is, of course, a native of the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood as well as one of the most recorded and influential alto saxophonists of his generation. His R&B-flavored sax style has certainly helped lay the groundwork for many of today's smooth jazz artists, but Sanborn has proven himself adept at just about everything he's tried, from spicing up the pop records of David Bowie, Paul Simon, James Taylor and countless others to performing straightahead, swinging jazz with a distinct modern bent.
Looking at the ticket order section of the TouPAC's Web site, it appears that tix are still available for the show, though the site as yet makes no mention of Sanborn being added to the tour. Given his status as something of a hometown hero, I'd guess that his presence on the bill will spark a surge of interest once the word gets around. So if you were on the fence about attending this concert, or if you're a fan of Sanborn's who's interested in the show now that he's on board, you'd better act quickly before it sells out .
