COCA gets Gutbucket for November 6 event

Gutbucket

Sometimes it pays to look closely at those mass mailings from record labels. That's how I learned that the NYC based band Gutbucket will play a couple of short sets at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA) on Sunday, November 6. As part what they're calling the "Imagine Weekend," COCA is holding an open house, including a number of live performances, to showcase for the community their programs and a new building addition.

Gutbucket's label describes them as "high-energy post-avant-bop," and thir press kit bio goes on to say, "Flitting from Latin to thrash to polka to klezmer and back, often within the space of a few bars, the group veritably attacks their music with the kind of ferocity usually reserved for punk, despite having earned their jazz bona fides." The quartet comprised of Paul Chuffo on drums, Ty Citerman on guitar, bassist Eric Rockwin and sazophonist Ken Thomson called their most recent CD Dry Humping the American Dream, which should give you some idea of the sensibility at work. They'll play in COCA's Founders’ Theatre from 1:00 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. and again from 3:00 to 3:20, and admission is free.

The bulk of COCA's live performance schedule is made up of theatrical and musical presentations aimed at children and families, and dance recitals (ballet, modern dance, etc.) so Gutbucket seems like a bit of a departure. And since they once went "in disguise" to record an album of songs for children called Dirty Sock Funtime Band/Create-a-Play, one can't help but wonder, at least for a second, if COCA really knows what they're getting here.

On the other hand, anyone can go on the Internet, just like you and me, and hear samples of songs like "O.J. Bin Laden" and "Night on Hamster Mountain," neither of which suggest that Gutbucket is aiming their show at the grade-school set. Or the bookers might just have Googled the band, and read this review of their live show. So, I suppose we should just presume that everyone knows what they're doing, and enjoy the free sounds, right?
